Gaura premanande Hari Haribol! Krsna Kanhaiya Lala ki jai!
Choti choti gaiyan chote chote gwal
Choto so mero madan gopāla (song by Sradheya Gaurav Krishna Goswami Ji)
Little Krsna is called Kanhaiya Lala. He is called this only in Vrindavan and nowhere else. The pastimes of Vrindavan are sweet and nectarean, of which the Bāla Lila is the sweetest.
Agayata bāla caritani
Yasoda maiya always remembers and sings the pastimes of Krsna while churning yogurt. These pastimes of Krsna are unforgettable for Yasoda maiya and devotees of the Lord. This way all the devotees are engrossed deeply in thoughts of Krsna. They always glorify the name, form, qualities and pastimes of Krsna. We also must learn this from the Braja vasis. They are role models for us. When we make any one of them our role model then this is called 'Raganuga bhakti' like Rupanuga, Nanda Maharājanuga, Radhanuga or others. Anuga means follower. All the Braja vasis are worshipable for us. We should remember those who remember Krsna. There are ācāryas in our paramparā who spent every moment in rendering services and relishing the pastimes of Krsna.
vande guroh sri-charanaravindam
The spiritual master is always eager to hear and chant about the unlimited conjugal pastimes of Sri Sri Radhika and Madhava, and about Their qualities, names, and forms. The spiritual master aspires to relish these at every moment. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master. (Verse 5, Sri Gurvastakam, Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
We should follow in the footsteps of these ācāryas. The ācāryas, spiritual master, sādhus, devotees have reached Goloka and their footsteps will also lead us there. This is a food for thought for you. Although these are not the pastimes, it is Krsna who made me share this thought with you all. We have to love Krsna and not only Krsna. That is not sufficient. We also need to love the devotees of Krsna. This is called Dāsānudāsa or servant of the servant.
We address others as Prabhu, which means master, so we must have that mood of servant towards the devotees. We must have an amicable and friendly attitude towards devotees. Serve them as well. Krsna will be pleased by that. Krsna is partially pleased when we serve Him, but if we also serve His devotees along with Him, then He is completely pleased.
We are hearing Krsna lila in sequence. Being born at midnight, He went to Gokula. He played some pastimes in Gokula and then He went to Vrindavan with Gokula-vasis. Gokula is also in Vrindavan, as the entire Braja is Vrindavan, but within that there are 12 forests, one of which is named - Vrindavan. There He became a Vatsapal, (Calf-herd). There He has killed various demons namely Vatsasura, Bakasura, Aghasura, etc. He has killed Aghasura in Sarpoli village.
We were discussing that it was the lunch time. Krsna was sitting in the centre of His friends. Balarama was not present with Krsna and His friends that day. Sometimes Krsna goes alone, without Balarama. Usually when Balarama is not there, some problems occur. This is going to happen today as Balarama is not there. Everyone is sitting around Krsna in a circle on the banks of Yamuna. Everyone is eating and sharing the food that they have brought from their homes. Everyone wants to share with Krsna. Many a times it happened that a friend would bite into something and realize that it is indeed delicious and sweet, so he would give the remaining piece to Krsna saying, “It is really sweet. You must taste it, Krsna.” Then Krsna would relish the remnants happily. This is love in friendship - Viśrambha Sākhya rasa.
This give and take happened during lunch time. Brahma was witnessing this pastime after glorifying Krsna on the killing of Aghasura. Brahma was unable to digest this Viśrambha Sākhya rasa. He thought, "Is this the same Krsna who is the cause of all causes and the Supreme Personality of Godhead?”
ishvarah paramah krishnah
anadir adir govindaha
Krishna, Who is known as Govinda, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the Origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the Prime Cause of all causes. ( Sri Brahma-samhita, chapter 5, verse 1)
How can the Lord of the universe spend such time with His friends and eat remnants of His cowherd friends ? He thought this is an ordinary child. It's difficult to believe that this is the Lord. When Brahma was perplexed with such thoughts, Krsna could sense these thoughts that he is unable to understand this Viśrambha Sākhya rasa.
avajānanti māṁ mūḍhā
mānuṣīṁ tanum āśritam
paraṁ bhāvam ajānanto
Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all that be. (B. G. 9.11)
Krsna decides to teach Brahma a lesson who misunderstood Him to be an ordinary human and all others with the same thought. One needs to understand Krsna philosophically. Krsna performed a special pastime. This was a long pastime. It lasted for one year.
While having lunch, Krsna looked on the other side where the calves were grazing and then all the calf herd friends realised that their calves were not there. They all became anxious regarding their whereabouts. Krsna asked them to wait and continue with their lunch and He went to look for the calves. When He returned with the news that the calves were lost, He found that the calf herds were also gone somewhere.
Krsna already knew that this was Brahma's deed. Krsna thought that it was already evening and time to return, but He couldn't return alone. Then He expanded Himself into innumerable forms as the calves and His cowherd friends. Then He, in the form of calves and cowherd friends, returned to their respective places. The next morning, They all went to the forest. Every cow and every Braja vasi gopī had Krsna as their child and this continued for one year. Balarama was not there that day but when a few days were left for year to end Balarama noticed that there was a special and never before love bond between the cows and the calves and the elderly gopas with their children. He was astonished as It was extraordinary. Then he inquired with Krsna about this and Krsna told him everything about how Brahma had stolen all the calves and His friends. Then He had to expand Himself into those calves and cowherd friends.
Krsna explained, “This special exchange of love that you see, anandambudhi-vardhanam, the Gopas loving their children or the cows licking and smelling their calves out of love, it's all Me.” Balarama understood everything and this continued till the year ended. The main motive of this pastime was something else. Teaching Brahma a lesson was also the objective, but Krsna also wanted to fulfil the desire of the Braja vasis to see Him as their child. The elderly gopīs wished to see Him play in their laps as their sons and the cows wanted Krsna to drink their milk directly from their udders. Many gopīs desired to marry Krsna. This way Krsna became the child of the gopīs and cows. At that time, some news was getting circulated that it was an auspicious time to get married. All the gopīs got married during that year and all of their grooms were Krsna.
kripa-sindhubhya eva cha
vaishnavebhyo namo namaha
I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Vaishnava devotees of the Lord. They are just like desire trees and can fulfill the desires of everyone, and they are full of compassion for the fallen conditioned souls. (Vaisnava Pranams)
Krsna is just like a desire tree, vanca kalpataru. In this way, the desires of all the Braja vasis were fulfilled by Krsna in this pastime. Now the year had ended and meanwhile Brahma had hidden the calves and gopas in Brahmaloka. When he looked back he saw that the pastimes were continuing uninterrupted and he thought that Krsna had brought all of them back from Brahmaloka and was playing with them. Brahma rechecked and found that all of them were still there with him and he was now perplexed. When he returned, Krsna revealed to him a special sight. He could see that all the friends and all the calves took the four handed form of Krsna and they were all worshiped. Then Brahma understood that Krsna displayed His opulence in this way. He is Govindam adi-purusham, He is the eternal Govinda, cause of all causes and the Supreme Lord.
Then Lord Brahma, who was seated on his swan, landed in Vrindavan. He bowed down to Krsna with all his four heads adorned with four crowns. Tears were flowing from his eyes. He was rolling in the soil of Braja pleading to Krsna with folded hands to forgive him for his foolish mistake. He sang special prayers to glorify the Lord as given in the 14th chapter of 10th canto of Srimad Bhagawatam. You can read this. This pastime is called 'Brahma Vimohan Lila'. Brahma was illumined by the nectarian pastime of Krsna. He was not able to understand the sweet pastimes of the Lord, then the Lord gave him special darsana.
