Srila Prabhupada once said in 1969: “We are spreading this Krsna consciousness movement because there is a great need of this consciousness throughout the world. And the process is very easy — that is the advantage.”
In December while on a travelling preaching tour, HH Lokanath Swami Maharaja thought of a way in which Maharaja would be able to chant with devotees and lovers of the Holy Name from all around the world. This gave birth to the ‘Let’s Chant Together’ sessions.
They last for about an hour, roughly from 6am to 7am IST. The session includes chanting followed by instructions, realisations and answering of questions.

HEAR WITH THE MIND!
I welcome you all. I hope you had a good time chanting and enjoyed the chanting and that you are satisfied with your chanting. I hope so and we pray for your happy chanting.
Attentive, meditative chanting is real chanting and that is what we wish to practice on during this japa conference. Ultimately we do not hear with the ear, but with the mind. We do not see with the eyes, but seeing is more complete when the mind is involved. So we see with the mind and like that all the senses are connected with the mind. They all report to the mind.
What we are hearing as we are chanting has to be heard by the mind and if the mind is hearing then we call that attentive chanting. So attentive chanting means the mind has taken note of what you are chanting and what you are hearing. The mind is registering thinking, observing , hearing, listening. It is not mindless or absent minded. Some call this is a very subtle topic. Mind is very subtle to understand.
When we talk of the mind a lot of subtle things are involved. There is something called oblivious to the surrounding. Lots of times we are so
absorbed in thinking of something, we are anticipating something. Then although a lot of things are happening and a lot of actions are going around, our mind doesn't perceive that because we are oblivious to the surrounding.
Like that we should also become oblivious to what is around us while we are chanting. We have to think only of Krsna, remember Krsna. As we hear we should become oblivious to the surroundings and become absorbed in thinking about Krsna, remembering Krsna and be engrossed in remembering His names and following His pastimes.
One time Buddha was asked if he saw some lady passing by. His response was that maybe someone had passed by, but he could not say whether it
was a lady or a gentleman, whether she wearing a blue saree or was he wearing a white dhoti. “I don't know. I didn't pay attention.” Buddha was not sleeping nor were his eyes closed. He was observed in meditating and he did not pay attention to what was going around. He was just absorbed in meditation. So that is one example. In Bhagavatam there is an example of Avadhuta Dattatreya. He had 24 gurus and one of his guru was a lohar, a blacksmith who was sharpening arrows. He was sharpening the arrow and he was totally absorbed in sharpening the arrow, fully attentive and totally unaware of surroundings. When he was asked some time ago if he had seen a big grand procession had passed by here, he responded, “I didn't see grand procession. Hare Krishna Nagar sankirtan has passed few kilometres long, but he said I didn't see. I didn't hear anything.” Why? Because he was observed in what he was doing , sharpening of the arrow. He didn't take note of anything around. So this Avadhuta Dattatreya said, “You are my guru. I make you my guru. Oh arrow sharpener, how attentively you are sharpening.”
We also have to absorb ourselves in this kind of activity and in our case we must be absorbed in chanting. So that's the goal as to how we should approach chanting – attention on hearing like that sharpener. His mind was fixed in what he was doing. We had to hear, the mind has to hear. I am trying to point out that its not the ear that hears but the mind. We say be attentive, pay attention or chant attentively. What is it?
It says our mind has to be attentive. The tongue has already uttered the holy name. The tongue has done its job. It will reach the ear unless there is a mind that is paying attention to what is entering the ear and what it is hearing. We will not hear our chanting. Unless the minds involvement is there we are not going to do attentive chanting. Your attention has to be on hearing what the tongue has uttered
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Sound vibration as it enters into the ear the mind has to not only hear but on the other hand immediately capture and registered that. Then the mind has to be there and should not be going off. If mind is busy elsewhere or already sleeping then we will not hear. If we have an attentive, alert mind then it is ready to hear. In the ear there is a provision to hear. The ear is the tunnel through which sound which has been uttered enters and passes through but at the end of the tunnel we can say there is the mind. Hearing is not going to happen, if there is no mind. What can influence us? We are influenced by what is around us at any given point in time. That is one thing. And what else? Always there is something that we had gone through yesterday or the night before or the year before. We went through some experience.
We are shopping. We enjoyed this. So the mind also enjoyed that so it is also going to revisit these places. Your mind and the things that are not around – distant places, distant country , distant people, this and that is going to be coming to you in your mind. This happens all the time and we are busy with that. That keeps our mind busy. You will have to think how to improve your chanting. You will chant with attention and if you take these things seriously you could improve your chanting. Accordingly, I think this kind of topic dhyan purvak japa or attentive chanting is related to offence less chanting. We had routine chanting. We have a ritual that everyday we had to work harder and harder on the mind and sharpen the intelligence so that we really enjoy and our atma become prasanna , satisfied.
Chant Hare Krishna and be happy or make our souls happy. Our mind is always busy 24 hours a day with sankalpa vikalpa, mind accepts something,
rejects something. All the time:
na socati na kanksati
samah sarvesu bhutesu
mad-bhaktim labhate param
One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman. He never laments nor desires to have anything; he is equally
disposed to every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me. (BG 18.54)
A Krishna conscious person’s atma is prasannatma. He is self satisfied by chanting and by attentive chanting, pure chanting suddha nama ucaran. Now my mind is prasan, happy and now it is not doing na socati na kanksati, not lamenting not hankering. So this way we lament for something, for this, that again a person is busy na socati na kanksati lamenting, hankering – “I want to get this that I don't have.
This kind of business to stop the mind from hankering and lamenting – sankalp , vikalp – accepting something ,rejecting something. 24 hours we are busy. Our mind is busy. We need to work on training our mind and that is attained by practice, purifying our mind by attentive chanting. In order to succeed we should endeavour to do attentive chanting. We should endeavour day in and day out . You want to be prasannatma. You want to be happy but then it is harer nama eva kevalam in order to become prasannatma. There is no other way. One is chanting Hare Krishna and only way in fact ultimately is attentive chanting. hat will make us happy. Make some kind of routine that will not make us happy if we are not
chanting. Mundane thoughts that will not make us happy, pray to become happy by attentive chanting and make extra effort.
29 SEPTEMBER 2019
SHARE KRSNA WITH OTHERS.
Today being Sunday some of you are not chanting but that is an every Sunday story. We have repeated that several times. But some are resting but those who are chanting are not resting. You are active. You are making a so called holiday into holy day – chanting the holy names in association of a holy man. Certainly you will become holy, fully holy. I congratulate you all. And I am pleased, Lord is pleased The whole Parampara is pleased with your chanting.
Some of you are continuing the holy name festival spirit. It's good and it's welcome. Why stop? It's the World Holy Name Festival so, I will quickly say that our Tulsi puja Mataji from Dubai, originally they are from Bharatvarsha ended up in Dubai. She organised 12 hour kirtan non stop kirtan in which 50- 60 devotees participated. This was also the time of her birthday. Happy Birthday to you! We are happy with Tulsi puja for organising non stop kirtan at her place and we all wish you happy birthday. You could all chant one maha-mantra for Tulsi puja Mataji. You could chant with me:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Also I think we mentioned this yesterday. We could repeat in Yavatmal that many Matajis have gathered and they are having a Japa Retreat and
Jayabhadra Mataji from Amravati has travelled all the way from Amravati to Yavatmal. She organised the Japa Retreat for the ladies and some 20-30 ladies are gathering in this event for 3 days and she is also organising ISKCON Girls Forum program for Young girls in the evening. So this is to promote the glories of the holy name. We are very, very happy with this endeavour.
And of course Sacidananda Prabhu is continuing his retreat at Govardhan Vrindavan and around 300 devotees have gathered there. I don't know all the details, but they are learning the art and science of developing love for the Lord or addressing the Lord from the core of the heart with feelings, crying for Krsna. The theme of the retreat is a pretty serious business activity and I am happy that Sacidananda Prabhu is organising that event. It’s still on, This is it's last day. Also in glorification of the holy name. Serve the holy name, establishing the holy name is the dharma of this age of Kali. So we are very pleased with this endeavour. You have to express your happiness by saying
You all have to take responsibility for the propagation of the holy name, be responsible by first chanting yourself . You could chant your own japa first then you could see how family members, your relatives, your friends, your neighbours, your colleagues can take to chanting the holy name of the Lord or even some brand new people jare dekho tare kaho krsna updesh or all those you come in contact with or interact with. You could also appeal to them to chant or explain to them how to chant or make sure that they are chanting. Take some responsibility for this for your own chanting and you also have obligation towards the propagation of the holy name.
So this is not only the responsibility of the Governing Body Commission or responsibility of only temple president or only temple management to spread and propagate the holy name of the Lord. On behalf of Governing Body Commission, on behalf of temple President, on behalf of the Temple Management, on behalf of your spiritual masters, you have to take this responsibility and of course on behalf of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. He is the One who has instructed all His followers to jare dekho tare kaho krsna updesh and bolo krsna bhajo krsna koro krsna-siksha. So this instruction the Lord has given to all of us and then Srila Prabhupada has organised this Society for Krishna Consciousness. We should all in an organised fashion with a definite strategy should proceed to propagate the holy name. We always have to remember what is this. When we say propagation preaching propagation of the holy name. This is propagation of Krsna.
We are sharing Krsna with them. We are sharing the merciful and all powerful and all beautiful Lord with them and this is the need of the whole world. This is what will satisfy each entity, each jiva. There is nothing else. Nothing better than Krsna that will make peace, bring satisfaction and make people happy and content. It is a big thing. It is not some sectarian or light thing. Take some responsibility to do this. Share Krsna in the form of the holy name.
We just received news from Noida that devotees are acting responsible.
ISKCON Noida is organising Padayatra. Padayatra is starting today from ISKCON Noida. They will walk for 15 days visiting dozens of towns and
villages before they reached Vrindavan just on time for the beginning of Vraja-mandala Parikrama, the beginning of the month of Damodar. So ISKCON Noida has taken this responsibility for propagating. They are starting this program for propagating the holy name of the Lord. So this is quite exemplary.
Tulsi that's a responsible act, Sacidananda Prabhu is acting in a very responsible manner and so is Jayabhadra. So keep taking more and more responsibility to share Krsna, Krishna consciousness with all around you, people everywhere.
Of course when we say propagate the holy name along with that we distribute Srila Prabhupada's books. We distribute prasada. We sometimes
organise some cultural events, some festivals. So many activities are there , but the holy name is in the centre. Krsna is in the centre. So along with the propagation of the holy name, book distribution, prasada distribution also happens festival organisation. It's a complete package.
Like that we wind up our japa talk. There is lot to do so get into action. Practice and propagate the chanting the holy names of the Lord to make ourselves Krishna conscious and rest of the world Krishna Conscious.
Gaur Premande Hari Haribol!

CRY FOR KRSNA!!
We have 442 devotees chanting with us today. In Yavatmal in Maharashtra one Mataji is chanting with 25 other Matajis. I am very happy seeing this. Also this being Saturday devotees in Melbourne, Australia get together. I think they must have assembled in Prabhupada quarters in Australia so they are also with us. Also there is a special mention of the other devotees who have assembled in Vrindavan. Few hundred devotees have assembled in Sacidananda Prabhu's retreat. They are also chanting. They are going to chant 64 rounds today, that's their target. Then they will end up crying for Krisna, end up or during chanting? Let's see whether they can achieve that.
Devotees have assembled in Govardhan for Japa retreat, they have termed it as 'Crying for Krsna'. I was thinking devotees should get together. I am encouraging gatherings of my disciples in Mayapur, Vrindavan, Mauritius, Melbourne , South Africa at various places. We have formed different groups basically consisting of my disciples. We have formed disciple care communication committees. They should get together not that they are not getting together now but those who are not coming together they should have such meetings. So you get together every month or week. This also could be the subject matter of discussion and that is chanting. Chanting should be the theme. Crying for Krsna. Devotees in Mauritius get together and they discuss 'How could we cry for Krsna'? Oh! When that day will be mine when I will cry
for Krsna'. Where are you Krsna?
This zoom conference that we have been conducting is also a Japa retreat, japotsava – festival of chanting. Whenever we get together you can discuss further what you have understood. As we get together and chant what you have, or haven’t understood or your realisations. You can raise some questions. You also raise certain questions here and I answer that. But during your meetings that should be the topic of discussion. Crying for Krsna should be as a result of the chanting. . Offense less chanting, pure chanting, suddha nama japa. ' prem-japa' or prem-kirtana. This is crying for Krsna. How to achieve that? We do discuss that to encourage the people on
a regular basis whenever you get together with your counsellors or with the group of devotees or disciples or in your temple or in your town. There could be more discussion when you get together in your temple, in your country.
Chanting is crying. Chanting is prem. Srila Prabhupada did mention that our chanting is crying. We should be crying like a baby. That's the goal or target. That's the perfection. That is ‘Mantra-siddhi' – perfection of chanting. What is perfection of chanting? We start chanting at the level of faith. Then we have to evolve from sraddha to prem. We have to evolve from sraddha to sadhusanga, bhajan kriya, anartha nivrutti, nistha, ruci, aasakti, bhava, and finally Krsna prem. Crying is going to happen at the level of bhava or prema.
santah sadaiva hrdayez su vilokayanti
yam syamasundaram acintya-guna-svarupam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
"I worship the primeval Lord, Govinda, who is always seen by the devotee whose eyes are anointed with the pulp of love. He is seen in His eternal form of Syamasundara, situated within the heart of the devotee.” ( Brahma-samhita 5.38)
This is the statement in the Brahma-samhita by Lord Brahma. Such darsana is possible for that person whose eyes are anointed or decorated
with premanjan or tears of love. That is crying. The intensity with which it comes. There are torrents of tears. Caitanya Mahaprabhu had prem .
nayanam galad asru dharaya
vadanam gadgada rudhaya gira
pulakair nicitam vapuh kada
tava nam grahane bhavisyati
O My Lord, when will my eyes be decorated with tears of love flowing consulantly when I chant Your holy name? When will my voice choke up,
when will the hairs me my body stand on the end at the recitation of your name. (Siksastakam Verse 6)
A person in that state of mind. Crying is state of our mind. When he is crying that is perfection. Crying is expression also of thinking, feeling, willing. I feel like crying. Sometimes you feel like crying.
Such perfection is not going to be achieved overnight. Rome was not built in a day as they say. Practice makes a man perfect. The state of mind when you feel like crying is perfection and it is not going to be achieved without practice. It will take practice of chanting attentively day after day, months after months, years after years chanting and attentively making all the endeavours.
Sometimes there will be success or failure. But with great patience we have to go on endeavouring, so one day or one of these lifetimes, we will be crying for Krsna. Crying for Krsna is not a cheap thing.
Crying for Krsna is such a title, which means loving Krsna or praying to Krsna .We love Krsna. We love God. Crying is one thing or crying is one of the symptoms . There are 8 different symptoms – asta-sattvic vikara. Caitanya Mahaprabhu explained nayanam galad asru dharaya that's one – crying or shedding tears. vadanam gadgada rudhaya gira- , choking of voice, pulakair nicitam vapuh kada/ tava nam grahane bhavisyati – trembling of the body. Or Mahaprabhu Kirtana
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam
Chanting the holy name, dancing in ecstasy, singing, and playing musical instruments, the spiritual master is always gladdened by the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because he is relishing the mellows of pure devotion within his mind, sometimes his hair stands on end, he feels quivering in his body, and tears flow from his eyes like waves. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master (Sri Gurvastakam Verse 2)
We sing in Gurvastakam that there is romanca or hair standing on the ends. Why single out the crying? When am I going to cry or when am I I going to love. Love is again a big, very deep topic. We should not take it lightly. Sahajiyas are very expert in crying for Krsna. Sahajiyas are sahaj. They take crying for Krsna very cheaply. They do an exhibition of their crying. One should not be shedding tears immaturely. When we advance in Krishna consciousness , we attain a certain maturity in Krishna consciousness then there will be crying. Crying is a feeling, it's a state of mind in which we are expected to achieve love of God. Not like sahajiyas. It is said, 'Easy to cry and easy to dry.' One may do whole a exhibition of crying. One may feel I am such an exalted devotee now, with this symptom and that symptom. That
is deceiving others, aie dusta mana tumi kiser vaisnav O wicked chanter , what kind of Vaisnav are you? Bhaktivinoda Thakur said like that. Sahajiyas feel others will be impressed by such crying.
I have to stop as I have Bhagavatam class in Nagpur temple. We should be honest and do introspection, do atma-parikshan and find where we stand and try to go to the next higher level . Starting from sraddha. We should be crying – Oh! I don't have faith. Crying for not having faith. At the level of sadhu sanga one should have feelings that I am so busy, can't go to Sunday Festival. At the level of anartha nivritti means look at the state of my bhajan? I am not able to chant 16 rounds properly. I don't have attraction for chanting.
One could also cry like this. That is also crying for Krsna. You should be crying – when can I chant my sixteen rounds properly? I am such an ayaram- gayaram . I have no attraction for chanting of the holy names of the Lord.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “I have no attachment for You Oh My Lord. I have no attraction for You.” Like that also one can cry. This is also crying for Krsna. Look at me, no faith, look at me I don't get any association, look at my and anarthas
There are so many anarthas that I have. When will I get rid of them. This is also honest crying. You could be praying like that. You have to keep your goal in mind. You have to do first thing first. Sraddha is first then there could be sadhu sanga. Sadhu sang can be the first level for someone. Anartha nivritti, becoming free from anarthas can be first stage for you. For different folks it will be different depending on where you stand. You should be crying – how can I go higher so that ultimately I will have bhava, emotion, feeling, prema.
Such crying will be more honest. There will be rolling on the ground. Ultimate objective is Premamayi service.
Think contemplate on whatever we shared.
See you tomorrow.
26 SEPTEMBER 2019
TIME TO CONCENTRATE ON THE QUALITY OF OUR CHANTING.
We are getting the whole world to chat, in different forums , different gatherings, in our own gathering here in zoom conference. I think we should be concentrating and working now on reviving our numbers. We had the prerogative of having almost 700 participants. Now we are only 460 so we should do some homework. All of you and all of us have to do it together, to work on increasing the number of participants at this conference. Padmamali Prabhu is giving you the target of 700 participants. Some of you are still in the festive mood, WHNF mood. They are still sending the reports and scores, some of you are doing that. That's nice. Some of you are giving your own personal scores of chanting more than 16 rounds. That's welcome. Minimum is 16 rounds, but the more the merrier. You may report or not report, but more chanting is always welcome. ISKCON Noida is reporting 10 top scores of Harinama bank in their report. There is this Harinama Bank. You could read. But you have to, I may remind you , send all your reports two world holy name conference. Yesterday we were showing the link and for the scores. So take note of that and send all your reports there. The right destination is world holy name conference.
I was thinking during the month of December there is book marathon and devotees do extra effort to distribute books. Not that they don't distribute books in other months. Books are to be distributed every month, everyday, but we distribute more books during marathon time. So likewise we make extra effort of spreading the holy name, get more and more new people, your relatives, friends, neighbours, school children, new devotees new people in the park, get them to chant. But it does not mean that throughout the year such attempts should not be made. We continue to some extent as much as we can manage, throughout the year. So keep doing that. There could be a World Holy Name Festival every month, every week ,every day, and the big one the Grand one will be during the actual World Holy Name Festival, official time when Prabhupada arrived in America. This is just a suggestion that all those who took part in World Holy Name Festival for those who were organising things, gather their team members, their groups , and do the review of World Holy Name Festival. Review of how was it. What were the strong points and what were the weak points. What were the challenges. In future we have to do this next year also. So make planning for next year of how to do it. Oh! We couldn't do this thing this year. Next time for sure we will do this. We will do that. So begin making plans, now itself. Do pre-planning for better success. Plan your festival. For next year make some plans. Some plan not the whole detail plan. So what strategy works and what strategy did not work, like that everywhere you should do you in temple or in bhakti-vriksha, in your own area where you belong. So do the review. Note it down, write it down and preserve the file or minutes of your meeting, resolutions that you will be adopting so that you can find them again for the world Holy Name festival and implement your planning. Work on your resolutions.
While doing marathon we were working on numbers of rounds that you were chanting or you were getting others to chat. That's why the Harinama bank was also there. Lots of deposits are there. I chanted 64 rounds everyday, and I chanted this many rounds on the first day and so many reports like that. So we have worked on the numbers increasing the quantity and for sure the Lord is pleased. kirtaniya sada hari. Some of you took 22 hours to chant the rounds and chanted 192 rounds. So that's the quantity you are working on or focusing on the quantity. That's also welcome. More the merrier as we said.
At the same time the quality is also equally important if not more important than the quantity or numbers. So you could and others also now concentrate on the qualitative chanting. So always do attentive chanting, offence less chanting. Chanting is of three kinds or three phases or stages as explained in the book ' Nectar of devotion'. Offensive chanting, clearance stage, and offence less chanting. So we have to make progress, attempt committing less or no offences. Minimise offences. That is then the clearing stage of offences.
Then there is ruci and then offence less chanting. Out of all these, our goal is to reach at offence less chanting or prem Harinama.
So work on that. You could get together with your team, your friends and discuss the topic. Discuss the topic of chanting without offences. Or how can I achieve this, so that I can chat without offences. Or meditative chanting.
Lovingly chanting the holy name of the Lord, so that can become the topic of our discussion. There is a report that devotees are gathering at Syamalangi Mataji's place and she is also going to serve prasada. So like that there could be gatherings this way. You can have a Japa session like this or it can be separate one, during the day or weekdays or holidays. Get together and discuss how to improve your chanting. How to improve and do quality chanting. How to evolve, improve and chant offencelessly. Counsellors can get together and discuss this topic how to improve the chanting. I am happy to announce that Sacidananda Prabhu has gathered many devotees for his seminar. They are gathering together at the foothill of Govardhan. Beginning from today it will go on for several days. He will be talking and others will listen. Sacidananda Prabhu who is sitting right next to me. He will be talking on 'Crying for Krsna'.
It's a big topic. They are going to learn how to cry for Krsna crash course. So for sure that gathering topic is how to chant better, with attention, feelings, when we are calling out to the Lord. When you are calling out it's not easy.
That's not the first thing you should be learning. There are other things also. But the ultimate stage is how to cry for Krsna. So some attempts are being done, to discuss to improve chanting or chanting with feelings. So we will also make like that for a few days. The purpose of this conference, is to improve our chanting, how to chant better, chant lovingly attentively. so next few days we will make some attempt, of 'Crying for Krsna', during this conference.
I am in Vrindavan and I have Bhagavatam class today , and before that I will be going for Srila Prabhupada Guru puja.
Gaur Premanande Hari Hari Bol!!

GLORIES OF WORLD HOLY NAME FESTIVAL.
harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha
For spiritual progress in this Age of Kali , there is no alternative, there is no alternative, there is no alternative to the holy name, the holy name, the holy name of the Lord. (CC Adi lila 7.76)
Kanhaiyalal is reporting from Vrindavana that on Holy Name Festival they did six hours kirtan daily and Bhagavatam classes by Sarvabhauma Prabhu. We welcome all of you chanters! We have received a wonderful report from Vrindavana.
World Holy Name Festival coordination is a global coordination , GBCs have assigned myself, Janananda Maharaja and Ekalavya Prabhu. Then on our behalf there are coordinators in different continents and countries. I cannot share the names of all those and several posts are also vacant for the same. For India Madhavi Gauri Mataji is communication coordinator and she is based in Delhi. We had some kind of state coordinators Padmamali Prabhu was coordinating, World Holy Name communication coordination providing inspiration to Holy Name efforts in the state of Gujarat and well at local level. There are many of them Parthasarathi Prabhu for Solapur, and like that particularly every town. Can’t say village and of course can’t say all the towns, many towns, many villages have coordinators. I personally came to
Yesterday evening we had a Grand finale kirtana at Krishna Balaram temple in the courtyard of Krishna Balaram temple in association and assistance of Pancagauda Prabhu, President of the temple. We had kirtana in the courtyard of Krishna Balaram temple with lots of temple devotees and visitors that officially we have concluded the World Holy Name Festival. World Holy Name Mahotsav ki Jai! Padmamali Prabhu has sent a quite an extensive report and then, he says this is not everything and he is gonna report more. Report of each, some six temples of Gujarat, their participation in their Nagar sankirtana, their Padayatras, their 64 rounds kirtanas and this and that, there is so much. This you will have to personally read through. It is quite a Mahabharata long, extensive report.
Final report from all of you, the participants of World Holy Name Festival, either global coordinators or national coordinators, state level coordinators, regional coordinators, local coordinators, you have to compile your reports
along with photographs and/or videos and send them to be uploaded on the World Holy Name Festival website. I don’t know the technical ID or access maybe someone could type and explain how they could upload and where to send their reports.
So this could be finally reported to GBCs and ultimately to Pancatattva so all reports whatever has been sent thus far, has been noted. We are not able to. I am not God and you know that, I don’t even remember and I cannot recall or repeat or share all those reports, but be assured that if you have sent the report here it has been noted and we highly appreciate your participation in the World Holy Name Festival and reporting about the festival. Reports are still pouring in, bombarding in, I cannot keep track of this : Mukund Madhav from Hadapsar, Pune. 100 devotees participated in Nagar sankirtana yesterday. In the garden, 150 new devotees chanted. It is Paramatma Prabhu and Caitanya Jivan Prabhu reporting from Jalgaon. And then part of the report is that Ekendra Gaur who chanted 192 rounds yesterday. He was busy 22 hours to complete his 192 rounds. So congratulations, so I think he is, Ekendra Gaur is the top chanter and someone Shrikant Gangul from Ghangur, Bhiwandi near Mumbai was writing something and it wasn't clear.
He says he chanted 200 rounds but I am not sure, so Ekendra Gaur seems to be the winner chanting 192 rounds. Then Swarupanand is reporting of a rock show in the market, Greater Noida, 300 participants. I mean those who participate are devotees, not necessarily temple devotees or they already are guests. They are visitors. If they chant Hare Krishna they are all devotees. We are all devotees. All the souls are devotees of Krsna. So he said 300 devotees – temple devotees, congregation of devotees and brand new devotee visitors also. Madhavi Gopi from Thane has chanted 32 rounds or something like that everyday. Jahnavi Ganga chanted a lot of rounds. 52 rounds she is also from Thane. We have taken note of your lots of rounds of chanting. Acknowledging and reading last one hour from time to time I am reading Siromani from Baroda and others chanting.
Rohini Jadav is very active in reporting chanting with children. Lots of children chanted because of her. Ojasvini all the way from Russia was chanting 64 rounds every single day, sometimes more than 100. Madhavanandini has chanted extra rounds also from Russia . Who is that from Toronto? Nama Kirtana is originally from Baroda and he is now in Toronto also managed to keep some Nagar sankirtana, going and getting visitors to chant one round in the temple. Srimati Radhika from somewhere chanted 32 rounds. 48 rounds Suchitra Sakhi from Greater Noida. There is also a report from Italy, Nandalal Prabhuji. I saw him. He sent photographs doing the Nagar sankirtana on the streets of Milan. Nagar sankirtana and report. Solapur Parthasarathi Prabhu wrote a report. It was very well planned like in the Gujarat temples, this temple also organised sankirtana, extra japas, walking every single day with participation of congregation of temple devotees. What I specially made note of was there were no rains in Solapur for some time. People were waiting where are the rains? Please send some rains. All the farmers, everyone was awaiting, as soon as the devotees started performing World Holy Name Festival in Solapur, in Nagar sankirtana, from nowhere, the clouds appeared
in the cloudless sky. Parthasarathi Prabhu writes they were experiencing clouds hanging right above the temple or where the kirtana was performed and soon there was rain. This happened several times whenever they used to start Nagar Kirtana or 24 hours sankirtana. The clouds gather and it rains so they had a realization of yagyatbhavati parajanyo the result of the yagya, the outcome of the yagya, sankirtana yagya also is parjanya, it rains. So this was first hand experience.Sometimes the rains may pour instantly, on the spot or the rains may happen the next day or next month, so the rains are the result of the sankirtana yajna.
Neetu Sharma from Greater Noida chanted. He is just a little boy, just 10 years old and he chanted 24 rounds yesterday and then Hardik Patel from America, originally from Gujarat. Hardik Patel has ended up in America and he bought, some sets of Bhagavatam and was distributing Srimad-Bhagvatam in Atlanta, America. So like that I am sure that there are more
reports, I do not remember or also we don’t have so much time to share all those reports. I have a good excuse to say that we have less time, the fact is, I don’t remember because there are so many reports, and I am just overwhelmed and I cannot share all those reports. Ramvijay is writing something. He did nagar kirtana with Mukund Madhav. They say it did not rain while doing kirtana but in Pune also there was rain after doing kirtana and sankirtana. Any other devotees wish to write up quick. Because there is some outstanding report which I missed or was not reported you could do so
in a few minutes that are at our disposal. Mahalakshmi is from Shirdhon Maharashtra. 60 devotees did japa. Mahalakshmi is my disciple from my family, blood relations. So Mahalakshmi did that. Syamalangi is also reporting that Bhakti Vriksha celebrated in Dubai and Bhakti Vaibhav course for one week in Dubai and kids chanted. I missed Jayatirtha from Raichur. 2500 participants in kirtana. I missed the report. So we congratulate Jaytirtha Prabhu on celebrating World Holy Name Festival in Raichur. It is in Karnartaka. Also Vaikuntheshwar from Baroda chanted 64 rounds. Sneha Gupta reports four students did 8 rounds of mala. And Solapur had 30 Harinama kirtanas in these 7 days. Jagannath Gangul says he chanted 200 rounds. It took a lot of time. Then Aradhya Madhavi from Baltimore all the way from America started Japa marathon. It started at 4 am like that and it went on for a long time I suppose. Kirtanas, downtown kirtans also, there
were many kirtans in the temple for three days. Thank you from Aradhya.
Reports from Gondia say thank you for the Holy Name Festival in Gondia. ISKCON Solapur is presenting further details – 2 times 12 hours non stop kirtana. Ratnavali Madhavi is reporting that Bhakti Vriksha from Sector 50…. Reports are not staying on the screen for long because there is a big push from the bottom or somewhere, so we cannot keep track of the long reports coming in. This 12 hour Harinama by Krishna Nama Prabhu. This must be Beed. This was at Baroda. Kaviraj Goswami did 48 rounds and 1hour Bhagavatam reading.
So I think it is wonderful, great. We did it , not one person could doit. This was participation of all of you from everywhere, not just from India but all over the world devotees participated and the final score from Bangalore 8300 extra rounds chanted besides 16 rounds. More than 8300 rounds were chanted in Bangalore by the devotees. Antaryami Krishna from Shillong, first year in Assam, he also took part in World Holy Name Festival, this was the first time
and I hope this is not the last time Thank you Antaryami. 32 rounds everyday last 4 days, and home kirtanas. There is also Neelambari Radha from Russia ,Moscow. So there is no end to this. Devotees from Satara are reporting.
From Latur 14 Nagar Kirtanas, 12 hours non stop kirtana. Radhika 32 rounds. Lalit Mohan 64rounds .Swaha Swaha, all these things taking place in a yagya. My daughter, Amulya can’t talk. She has a talking problem, but she did Japa fluently. Mahadev 48 rounds everyday from Greater Noida. Pandarinath from Sangli Padmamali from Gujarat reports that daily 1lakh people received messages, about Harinam sankirtana. That’s a big report.
Read Bhagavatam at corporates everyday, Lakshminath Prabhu from Bangalore. 32 rounds from Juhu Krishnalok and our Padayatras of course, you know all India Padayatra, Kanpur Padayatra, Maharashtra Padayatra, Tirupati Padayatra. They were on the road everyday. They travel for whole year, but especially during this World Holy Name Festival they made an extra effort to get people to participate in chanting, dancing. We should be remembering them. Those first year Padayatris are under going lots of inconvenience to bring the holy name to more towns and more villages. All glories to the Padayatra devotees.
Pandarinath Prabhu is proudly announcing that his wife Sridevi read Bhagavad-gita four chapters So Sridevi and Radhika Raman from Toronto earlier were in India and went to preach the glories of the holy name to family members. They are in need of the holy name he realised, so he fulfilled the demand. Fulfilled the supply, as there was a demand. Thank you Radhika Raman for the propagation of the holy name. Radhika Raman is in India now.
I think we will read the reports later on and we should stop here , it’s time for greeting the Deities in different temples. And I will make some concluding comments tomorrow about the World Holy Name Festival, on how we could
possibly stay high forever and keep spreading and sharing the glories of the holy name with others. Also besides this charity begins at home. Besides, we chant for our own purpose, our own cause and we could keep chanting for others benefit , which is “Paropkar”. We will talk in the next session more about conclusion, putting comments on World Holy Name Festival.
JAPA TALK 24 SEPTEMBER
LORD IS ATTACHED TO HIS DEVOTEES.
There are devotees chanting in 457 places. Actually, it is due to Srila Prabhupada's mercy that chanting is happening in still more places.
Hundreds of reports are pouring in from various places on the last day of the World Holy Name Festival. More and more reports are coming. The reports that come tomorrow will be the last and final. I want to declare the reports which I remember. However you are also free to read the reports that come after the Japa sessions. You may also read this report in the World Holy Name Festival website also.
These glorious reports are also the glories of the holy name because all those participants who are chanting are chanters of either japa, or participating in a kirtana mela or doing nagar sankirtana in some street. Wherever those devotees are chanting, those chanters are also glorious. All glories to all those chanters!
Muralimohan Prabhu through this japa conference has reminded us that in ISKCON we distribute the holy name, Prabhupada books and prasada. By doing all these one becomes a worthy ‘paropakari', doing something good of great benefit for others. The recipients of these three items – the holy name, Prabhupada books and prasada are really greatly benefitted. Those who share these gifts do ‘paro upakar' and are glorious.
Devotees in Toronto, Canada have sent their reports through the japa conference. World Holy Name Festival was celebrated in Bangladesh. Sankirtana Gaur Prabhu organised sankirtana in Bangladesh, a Muslim country, He says that many Muslim youths had joined the Nagar Sankirtana in Bangladesh. It is glorious.
Devotees in Dubai are glorious. They have a program called 'Nityam Bhagavata Sevaya' where devotees assemble to hear Bhagavatam during World Holy Name Festival before they start work. The topics of these Bhagavatam sessions are japa. They are reading from Namamrta and Prabhupada books which has all the quotes of glorious Harinama.
In Bhiwandi devotees are chanting. Srikanth Ganguly chanted 140 rounds and he is still going to chant another 20 rounds today. Gaur Prabhu has taken a vow to chant 192 rounds. I think that is 300,000 holy names. In Bangalore, 200 devotees were chanting extra rounds. So far they have chanted more than 7000 extra rounds. 200 devotees took part to chant extra rounds. And a mataji from Pune, Rohini Jadhav Mataji, chanted and got different children to chant japa also.
From Solapur, Ramalila Mataji is doing Nagar Sankirtana and got as many as 70 Matajis who went into the streets and with their family members. Nandamukhi Mataji from Noida chants 40 rounds daily during World Holy Name Festival. In Jamshedpur Bhadra Revathi Prabhu chants 36 rounds. Madhavi Gauri Mataji from Delhi is the coordinator of the Holy Name festival in India. She does all the communication. We will have to thank her for her efforts for spreading the word around for the World Holy Name festival. She is also reporting that chanting is taking place in remote parts of Africa and Nepal. There is chanting and dancing in Bangladesh. We welcome those reports from those countries. Their japa must be glorified. She will send more reports tomorrow morning.
Neetu Sharma from Noida chanted 20 rounds. Radha Chitta Hari from Noida chanted 22 rounds today. Chakrapani Radha and Yogi chanted 64 rounds. Advaita Acarya and Sita Thakurani chanted and they are gathering lots of people and getting them to chant in various parts of Noida. Even Hari Kirtana Prabhu collected members from his colony and made them chant one round. Everyone is doing their best to glorify the holy name by chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna themselves and getting others to chant. So today is the last day of the World Harinama Festival. If you have not done anything so far, this is the last chance. Today is the last day for your participation. From Melbourne Australia there is a report of Nagar Sankirtana, and book distribution and tonight Bhakti Rasayan Maharaja is going to conduct Nagar Sankirtana in Melbourne, Australia.
Wonderful! Very, very happy to hear that.
Devotees are distributing prasada in the World Holy Name Festival and cooks are also glorious. We are grateful to all those cooks who are cooking prasada for distribution during the World Holy Name Festival. In Gurgaon Nagar Sankirtana was conducted in a new neighbourhood. Let's stop this reporting part now and I shall share something glorious from Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s antim lila.
One night there was kirtana in Nabadwip, Mayapur at Srivas-angan’s, a famous kirtana sthali. Every night Mahaprabhu would conduct kirtanas. Mahaprabhu gathered only His confidential and pure associates to chant and the whole night Caitanya Mahaprabhu was chanting and dancing. In Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s chanting and dancing, He created the vibrations which are still there, even to this day. That is what is causing us to chant Hare Krishna. Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s chanting is a cause of our chanting – sarva karana karanam. He chanted and He is still chanting and hence we are chanting, We should remember that. Therefore we are part of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's chanting movement.
This is how Caitanya Mahaprabhu had done mighty kirtana in Srivas angan. So one night during kirtana, Srivas Thakur noticed that there was some kind of disturbance, some cry was heard from the inner chamber of his house. When he went he was shocked to find that his son had died. The ladies were crying. Srivas Thakur wanted these ladies to stop the crying as it could disturb Gauranga in His chanting. This was his preaching to the ladies and his good wife, Malini was
crying as her son (one of their five sons) has died. Srivas Thakur was explaining to the ladies that dying can’t be avoided. ‘Death is surely going to come one of these days. The departure of our son is glorious because kirtana was going on in our house. You all must have heard the chanting of the holy name, that was going on in our angan (courtyard). How glorious is his departure!. There was nothing to worry. Our son has definitely returned to the spiritual world. In that sense this is an occasion for celebration. Our son has gone back to Godhead as he was hearing the holy name before his departure.’
Srivas Thakur also told the ladies that now they have to stop crying. If they do not stop crying, and if he hears them crying again then he will throw himself in the Ganga and leave his body because of the disturbance they will be causing to Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s kirtana. Mahaprabhu and His kirtana party were getting distracted.
After a warning like that Srivas Thakur returned to the kirtana mandali, kirtana party with Gauranga with His associates, The Pancatattva and HIs associates were fully absorbed in the kirtana, forgetting the surroundings. They were in their own world of chanting. Then at some point, the kirtana stopped and Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to know that there was some disturbance. He said, ‘I feel there is some difficulty. Something’s wrong.Something’s happened?’ Srivas Thakur was just surprised by His perception and Mahaprabhu’s guess and said, ‘ Yes, You are right.’ Upon enquiring what has happened, He was told that Srivas Thakur’s son had died and in the middle of the kirtana Srivas Thakur had gone inside the house and had stopped the ladies from crying and rejoined the chanting and dancing. He did not give any impression that any calamity had taken place. This was told to Gauranga Mahaprabhu.
This way Caitanya Mahaprabhu realised something and He expressed His realisation. This was great appreciation for Srivas Thakur. He said,’ Just see how Srivas Thakur is attached to the holy name. How much he did. He did not want my kirtana to be disturbed. So he expressed total detachment from his family and children. Especially his son has died and he showed absolute detachment, totally detached because he was totally attached to the holy name and was attached
to Me and so he managed to develop detachment from the family relations social relationship with his son.
So we are supposed to be attached to the holy name and it is a ladder from sraddha to prema so we could see how Srivas Thakur had achieved that, of course that asakti is beyond. I want to say one more thing, that was Mahaprabhu’s statement, ‘Just see how attached our devotees, especially Srivas Thakur, are to me. How could I leave them behind?’ These were Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s words when He was thinking of taking sannyasa. He could not keep His thoughts within Himself. He uttered it, a slip of the tongue. He couldn't resist. How could He leave such devotees such as Srivas Thakur? ‘Look at him.’ He said. ‘I am taking sannyasa. How can I leave?’ This is the Lord’s statement. The Lord is also equally attached to the devotees who are attached to Him. This we could see in this episode.
Attachment to the Lord is developed by getting attached to the holy name. The names of the Lord, the holy name and the Lord are not different identities. They are one and the same! We shall stop here. Today is the last day. Reminder to all over there to distribute the holy name, prasada and books also and the glories of the holy name. This way you are assisting the Lord.
dharma-samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge (BG 4.8)
KIRTANS WILL GO UNOPPOSED!
Welcome all. The entire parampara is blessing you, starting from Brahma, who appeared as Brahma Haridas Thakur and all acaryas are blessing the chanters. I am just conveying those blessings on behalf of the previous Acaryas, including Srila Prabhupada.
You are all blessed that you are getting blessings of the parampara. On the conference today we have 442 participants. We know the world is chanting. More and more new participants are also chanting and also many regular chanters are chanting at different places. Only difference is we are not able to see them on the conference. Everywhere chanting is going on and that gives us joy. Whole parampara is joyful. Gaurang is watching all the chanters. Lots of reporting has happened during the Japa session. Specially devotees have chanted additional number of rounds, from different parts of the world and different parts of India. In Ahmedabad 55 devotees chanted 64 rounds.
Devotees from Bhiwandi and from New Bombay, Ekanath Gangul also chanted 64 rounds. Ramlila Mataji from Solapur reported her daughter in law chanted 32 rounds for the first time. Like that Panchali from Greater Noida chanted 32 rounds and I don't even remember all the reports. I only said some of them which came to my mind. Someone reported doing 118 rounds. I think that was the biggest score.
Syamalangi Mataji from Dubai managed to get more people to chant and even kids chanted on small Japa malas. For small kids there was the small Japa mala with 27 beads. Parents and children were chanting in Dubai. Efforts were made in other parts of the world also to chant more. Get more people to chant. Advaita Acarya from Greater Noida is arranging a holy name festival there today and you know he had been reporting that devotees are preaching in different parts of Noida with great success. They reported to me yesterday in the park that each one of them got more than 500 new people to chant the maha-mantra. Manjulali Mataji reported 630 school children chanted one round of maha-mantra. This is in Bangalore. Advait Acarya Prabhu was chanting from Slovenia. He did not report anything, but I was happy to see him chanting. Hardik Patel distributed Srila Prabhupada's books which are full of the glories of the holy name. Book distribution is also a celebration of the World Holy Name Festival. Like that, we should remember your reporting made here. That is all right, and we have only one more day to go – today and tomorrow. You may continue reporting to me on this conference, but you should be visiting World Holy Name Festival website and should be sending your reports to Ekalavya Prabhuji. Dinanukampa Mataji can guide all how to do the total reporting of entire week. You should report
your personal report, report of your city, or report of your entire country or continent. Dinanukampa Mataji and Madhavi Gauri mataji will check how to do the final reporting and prepare the combined report of everything. This will
be eventually reported to the GBC(Governing Body Committee.) They will not go into minute details, but will have an overview of bib things, big numbers and there will be winners.
Till now so many reports are coming. Trilokinath from Brisbane, Australia reported Harinama is going on there. The Bhakti Vriksha group of Srimati Radhika chanted yesterday. I want to stop this reporting now, and want to tell
you some glories of the holy name, this morning.
We are saying that we will be talking about the glory of Harinama, but this is also like a report of Maha Harinama Sankirtana that took place 500 years back in Navadvipa. For the past few days you have been hearing how Caitanya Mahaprabhu was instructing and inspiring followers to go out and chant and dance and spread the glory of Harinama. ‘Share glories of the holy name, share the holy name with others.’ Caitanya Mahaprabhu also told them
to come back and report him.
One day many devotees presented a very bad report to Mahaprabhu. It was very discouraging. That was that Chand Kazi along with his police force were opposing the kirtana. They were opposing not just by saying, ‘Oh! Don't do it!
You can't do it! They went even beyond that and started beating and threatening all the chanters. They started breaking mrdangas.” There was reporting like this from all over. Such reports were reaching Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When Mahaprabhu heard these reports He was very furious. He was very angry like a rudra personified. He was in the mood of destroying all those agents and parties and individuals who were opposing Mahaprabhu’s or Hari’s kirtana or the holy name 'Hare Krishna'. Then Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that they should gather all the devotees from Navadvipa. “I will also be there in the front of the procession. We will all go to Chand Kazi's house. I will question him, threaten him, scare him so that he doesn't stop our kirtana.” So then a big number of devotees arrived on the scene. They most probably gathered at Srivas Thakur's house. His courtyard was known as 'Srivas Angan. So the news spread.
All the Navadvipa residents became very, very delighted and jubilant. Because there was going to be the Maha Harinama Sankirtana party and Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu was going to lead the procession. They all started sweeping and cleaning the streets. They decorated the streets and entrances of their homes. So that the kirtana party can be greeted, whenever they will pass by their homes. All those who arrived at the evening time, were carrying the mashal or lamp in their hands as it was evening. There were so many of them with torches. The number of participants was amazing. There were millions of participants. This number was beyond the number of residents or citizens or population of Navadvipa. Many demigods had arrived in disguise and there was an overpopulation. The amount of decoration done on the streets was also amazing. They were wondering who is decorating this? Residents were decorating, but they noticed there was much more additional decorations that had taken place. Some visiting personalities also got busy in decorating the town. I can't give all the details. There are so many details. There is a whole chapter on this in Caitanya Bhagavata. Vrindavan Das Thakur has explained this kirtana and kirtana party. This party was divided into so many groups. Advait Acarya was leading one of the parties and Haridas Thakur was dancing and leading another party.
Nityananda Prabhu said, “ No! No! I can't be away from You, my Lord. Wherever You are in whichever party You will be I will be next to You. So like that it was a well organised Sankirtana procession. Now it was heading towards the house of Chand Kazi. “Where is Chand Kazi? Get him!” Those of you who have visited Navadvipa Mayapur know where Chand Kazi's samadhi is. Imagine that was the location of the house of Chand Kazi. And then this whole procession started heading towards the house of Chand Kazi. There was a whole uproar as devotees were chanting and dancing.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
They were surcharged with the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. It was heard from the far distance and now Chand Kazi was also able to hear this, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna! He was the one who had been stopping the kirtana all these days. He used to say, “Stop this kirtana! Kirtan must stop! We will threaten you , we will beat this kirtaniyas and break their mrdangas.” These orders were already in place, but this day, as Mahaprabhu's party was chanting there was no opposition. Chand Kazi was wondering what's happening? His followers reported to him that this is Nimai. Nimai is coming with the big procession, chanting party and dancing party. Some of them are saying, “We will catch Chand Kazi! We will kill Chand Kazi! When Chand Kazi heard reports of this huge harinama party, headed by Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Advaita Acarya, Haridas Thakur, Srivas Thakur, Gadadhar Pandit. All His associates were there performing nagar Sankirtana. Finally the kirtana party arrived right in front of Chand Kazi’s kothi.
Chand Kazi was trying to hide, feeling his end is near now. He cannot save himself. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu managed to have audience with Chand Kazi. There was the dialogue between Chand Kazi and Gauranga. Chand Kazi was also greeted in his own way, so then there was a dialogue between two great personalities. That was a very good and instructive dialogue. Very inspirational dialogue in fact, which we should study and read from Caitanya Bhagavata. Gist of it is that Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “Oh! What happened? You have been stopping our kirtanas all these days, for the past several days, but today we did not see anyone opposing us. We did not encounter any opposition. There was no one trying to stop us. What happened? Why today no one came to stop our kirtana? Tell us what happened? Kirtana went unopposed.” Then Chand Kazi shared his experience of the night before. What he had encountered or what he had gone through. He said in the middle of the night when I was fast asleep, I heard the roaring sound of a lion, coming in my direction. I was woken up and I saw a very scary scene. Literally there was the lion, but His face was only lion like and His body was human-like. He jumped on my chest, and said that you were stopping My kirtanas, and stopping this Hare Krishna Hare Krishna chanting? I will kill you if you continue such attempts, I am ready to kill you.
He had a long fingers and sharp nails. He placed them on my chest. He was trying to dig them deeper into my chest. There was blood from my chest, but luckily he was kind to me. He said I will let you go, but if you ever again try to
stop My kirtanas or chanting and trouble the kirtaniyas , dancing on the streets of Navadvipa, if you ever tried to stop that I will be back. I will then cut you into pieces and make chutney of you and eat that. Understand? Chand
Kazi was sharing his experience of the night before. I said you may not believe what I said but look, and he uncovered his chest he removed his kurta and showed the marks of the nails of that person who appeared last night.
They are still fresh can you see?
This is not the end of that pastime, but we need to stop here. But the gist is that Mahaprabhu had promised that I will protect you. You do the kirtanas and if anyone is opposing you, I will take care. He had said this. Then what
happened in the case of Chand Kazi. Now you know. That lion was Narasimha. Gauranga is Narasimha. kesava- dhrita-narahari-rupa. Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared as Narasimhadev and He protected. Then we know from history that there was an order that from today onwards Nimai's Kirtana party will go on unopposed. No one will stop it. Nimai's Kirtana will go on in Navadvipa. He passed that order. This pastime is also called Chand Kazi's uddhar Lila. He was liberated, and we know that this Chand Kazi was none other than Kamsa. In Caitanya Mahaprabhu Lila has appeared as Chand Kazi. Then there was Chand Kazi uddhar. In Mayapur there is a samadhi of Chand Kazi. That samadhi is not only visited by Muslims but also by Gaudiya Vaisnavas. We have Navadvipa-mandala Parikrama in Mayapur, that time we
all go to Chand Kazi's samadhi. We offer our respects and we do Parikrama of his samadhi. Caitanya Mahaprabhu liberated Chand Kazi and then kirtanas went on.
So go on chanting and reporting. We have one more day.
22ND SEPTEMBER 2019
LORD PROTECTS THE CHANTERS
We appreciate you all and congratulate you all for chanting with us this morning also. Today is Sunday and we have only 396 participants so far. Currently world holy name festival is going on and considering that the number of chanters are less. Some of the devotees who chant with us on this conference either they are sleeping or they are doing something else and so they are not with us, which is a sorry state of affairs.
Namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur ki jai! He is our Namacarya. Acarya of the holy name. Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu designated him as namacarya. Who designated him? The Supreme Personality of Godhead! Gauranga! Lord designated, promoted, appointed him as namacarya. Acarya of the holy name. By his mercy only we used to chant and we are chanting and also celebrating this world holy name festival. By the mercy of Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur only we will be able to celebrate this World Holy Name Festival successfully.
Otherwise he is also an acarya of our sampradaya, Brahma- Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya. First acarya or found acarya is Brahma and he appeared as Brahma-Haridas. His name is Brahma-Haridas so he is Brahma and Haridas. We pray at his lotus feet, for his mercy. Those participants of the
world holy name festival and those who are listening now to the glories, from all over the planet and those who are participating, require the mercy of Haridas Thakur. World Holy Name Festival requires boost and blessings and divine intervention of Haridas Thakur. He could do such things and we need his power. We require his blessings when we are in the middle of this herculean task of celebrating World Holy Name Festival. And those who are not participating in this festival, may Namacarya Haridas Thakur give them intelligence and engage them also in glorification of the holy name, by organising and participating in this festival.
There were very difficult circumstances. Against all odds namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur chanted. One of the situations was when he was being
beaten in public in the marketplace. Still he did not stop chanting. Lord had noticed this, how this devotees namacarya Haridas Thakur, was beaten by Chand Kazi's men. Lords heart melted and he had rushed to the scene. With his Sudarshan chakra. Lord was ready to cut the necks off. Just then Lord noticed in spite of all such treatment being given by Chand kazi's men , Haridas Thakur was mercifully disposed and very kind to them. So then Lord decided not to use his weapon , Sudarshan to kill or crush this folks into pieces, Lord did not do so. Then he did something else to protect namacarya Shri Haridas Thakur. Which was that market place that we cannot tell you.
But that scene, comes to our mind when talking today. When namacarya Haridas Thakur was being beaten in the marketplace public also was
watching, and there were various reactions of different people on Haridas Thakur being beaten. And what was the reaction of the Lord? He had also appeared at the scene. We try to visualise this scene. The Lord is there with his Sudarshan and then He couldn't use His Sudarshan, as Haridas Thakur was being kind to those who were beating him. Then He was thinking of some alternative to protect him. How should I protect My Haridas? So then what did the Lord do? Lord was coming in between Haridas Thakur and those who were beating him and all that beating which was done with so many long and strong sticks, they were now beating on the back of the Lord, Gauranga. Then Caitanya Mahaprabhu displayed very extraordinary pastime, which lasted for 21 hours, sapta-prahar Mahaprakash Lila in Navadvip Mayapur.
So series of various scenes were there and one of them was namacarya Haridas Thakur and Gauranga Mahaprabhu reciprocating and talking, so during that time Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu uncovered his back. Haridas Thakur looked and saw the marks on Mahaprbhu’s back, marks of the beating with the stick. When Haridas Thakur saw that, immediately he realised and he was reminded of that ghastly episode where he was being beaten. He realised that the beating had taken place on the back of his Lord so he lost external consciousness. He started rolling on the ground. ‘Oh for my sake my Lord has taken this beating. Just see the kindness of my Lord. ……..na me bhaktah pranasyati. He has declared in Bhagavad-Gita, that My devotees will never be perished. He had declared that. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu had also saved Haridas Thakur. He used to say , – suno suno Nityanand suno Haridas, please chant and spread the glories of the holy name, and then report back to me. Do not fear, I will be there, if need be, I could come on the scene to take care.
paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam …… I will appear and take care of those dusta or miscreants. He had mentioned that to Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur. So here we see that promise that He had given to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and also as Caitanya Mahaprabhu was fulfilled. ‘You go. Here you propagate, you chant the holy name. If anyone is opposing I will take care, I will come in the middle of those. We see all this demonstration of that promise. His words we remember when such pastime took place. It reminds us of the glories of the holy name, glories of Gauranga, and glorious chanter of the holy name namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur. So that is the thing you should be reminded to remember, while chanting. Books are the basis, siddhant or bases of the power of chanting of the holy name of the Lord. So you are chanting and dancing, doing japa or Harinama. Japa that we do, is for our own good. We cannot just remain Bhajananandi's ,
just selfish, self centred, worried about our own liberation only. In Gaudiya Vaisnava parampara, there are 'gostyanandi' , spreading the glories of the Lord and the holy name, share them with others. Gostyanand. Bodhayantaha parasparam'. So japa is ‘Bhaja anand' and Harinama Sankirtana on the streets as it is happening now, in Noida and other places, is Gostyanand.
64 rounds are also chanted. I am seeing the whole scene in the Ahmedabad, devotees have gathered with the mission of chanting 64 rounds. I am also getting reports from Bhiwandi and other places. Lots of 64 rounds chanting is being done. That's nice, others could also do this. This Japa time is also part of the holy name festival. Chant more and more rounds, get new people to chant.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
In Noida Temple yesterday 120 visitors chanted one round of Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Others also can do such things. New people some 4000
people were invited in Noida temple and they were also given beads and they chanted. Prema Padmini mataji sent report , they devotees chanted in the park this morning which was a beautiful scene, in the park so many people sitting and chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. They are visitors and they also chant. From Noida Sita Rani Mataji manage to go on the streets to do Harinama.
There is a report from Dubai. There Matajis are making visitors chant one round of maha-mantra which is appreciated. We also heard report from
Madhavanandini from Russia, that devotees are getting together and they are doing Marathon of chanting. Radhika Raman Prabhu from Toronto
participated in chanting with us this morning. He didn't share any reports. Is Toronto Temple participating in the holy name festival? If not, participate now in the World Holy Name Festival. Remind Bhaktimarga Swami Maharaja to arrange special programs for World Holy Name Festival. Give my message to him. Reports are pouring in. Hare Krishna to all the organizers. Kanpur is going on padayatra.
So today, tomorrow and day after tomorrow still you have the chance. Today is Sunday, you can make this holiday into a holy day. Don't take breaks, stay busy. Today we are expecting more than 10000 devotees from Delhi NCR, and there will be Maha Maha Sankirtana in Delhi today. I will also be there. You can do something similar in your respective countries. There is one more report which I can see now reports are just pouring in. Yesterday in different parks around Noida, 550 new people chanted one round of maha-mantra.
21st September 2019
Hare Krishna, Welcome and Thank You for joining this conference and chanting. There are about 500 devotees chanting from all over the world, as well as some more on FaceBook.
I am also getting lots of reports on the screen. You are all in high spirits and they are inspirational reports. It is inspirational just to see you chanting what to speak of getting reports of you getting others to chant as part of the World Holy Name Festival. I was reading several of the reports while I was chanting. There were so many of you sending reports, I could not read them all. You could also have read.
Hearing the holy name and reading the holy name is not Maya. Talking about reports, I was listening to Caitanya Bhagavat. I heard and understood that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu chanted….
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama
Rama Rama, Hare Hare
…. Himself. He was chanting and dancing in the nectar of the holy name and at the same time He was instructing others, His associates, especially Haridas Thakura and Nityananda Prabhu:
suno suno nityananda, suno haridas
sarvatra amar ajna koroho prakas prati ghare ghare giya koro ei bhiksa
bolo `krsna', bhajo krsna, koro krsna-siksa iha bai arna boliba,
bolaiba dina-avasane asi' amare cohiba
"Listen, listen, Nityananda! Listen, Haridasa! Make My command known everywhere! Go from house to house and beg from all the residents, `Please chant Krsna's name, worship Krsna, and teach others to follow Krsna's instructions.' Do not speak, or cause anyone to speak, anything other than this.” Sri Sri Godruma Candrer Ajna "The Divine Command of Sri Godruma-candra” by Srila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura)
On top of that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu further instructed to preach the holy name. It is a festival. He told them all to come back at the end of the day and report their preaching efforts to Him. “Do not be afraid. Wherever you spread the glories of the holy name, I will be there with my Sudarshan Cakra. I will protect you. You go preach.” He was instructing like that – “You chant and you should instruct the whole world to also chant the name of the Lord.” He also went out to preach.
The instructions to Haridas Thakura, Nityanand Prabhu and the others to become Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu followers, devotees and associates. These instructions are not just there for them. We should take it in the spirit that those instructions are for all of us. We should also remember what Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said – “ I am with you. I will protect you. Surrender unto Me. Do not fear.”
Krsna told Arjun in Bhagavad-gita:
mam hi partha vyapasritya
ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah
striyo vaisyas tatha sudras
te 'pi yanti param gatim
O son of Prtha, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of lower birth-women, vaisyas [merchants], as well as sudras [workers]-can approach the supreme destination. (BG 9.32)
Krsna says it in Sanskrit and in Bangla. In Kurukshetra He is saying the same thing. He was also sharing the nectar of the holy name with others. There are two different mentalities – the ant mentality and the dog mentality. Ants are expert at finding something sweet. When they come across something, they do not continue to eat it. They turn around and invite everyone – “ Please come. Let’s all go and eat.” This is very different from the dog mentality. He has a greed mentality. A very different attitude and approach to the ant. A dog had a piece of bread in his mouth. He saw his reflection in a pool of water. There he saw the dog with a piece of bread in his mouth. His greed mentality of wanting that piece of bread resulted in his losing the piece he had in his mouth. Vaisnavas are like ants.
That is their recognisable trait. They can identify with your unhappiness and have a solution for that.
I was reading about ISKCON Pune. Last year for the World Holy Name Festival they held kirtana simultaneously at the same time in108 towns. This year they want to do this simultaneous kirtana in 208 towns. This is amazing and wonderful. So what about Noida? You can start with at least 25 towns.
In Noida as part of the World Holy Name Festival in the morning they are going to different parts with thousands of japa malas and getting them to chant at least one round One devotee who normally chants 16 rounds has chanted 37 rounds.
Caran Tulasi Mataji from Mexico who is getting others to chant.
Revati Raman Prabhu from Thane is getting a group tighter and they will all chant 64 rounds.
Some devotees are making their way to Wada Farm to chant with them.
May the Lord shower His blessings on all the participants , chanters and listeners.
May they all be blessed by Sri Krsna Caitanya. The Lord is certainly pleased. I am
also pleased and give my blessings.
Those who haven’t done anything as yet should do something at least. Visit the World Holy Name Festival website for ideas and do send your ports, even at the end of the Festival.
20th SEPTEMBER 2019
BE THE DISTRIBUTOR OF THE HOLY NAME
Yesterday we discussed Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He started chanting Hare Krishna. He took to the chanting and that chanting influenced Him very much.Of course, this happened very quickly as we have Krsna in Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He has technically gone mad as a result of the chanting of Hare Krsna – transcendental madness. We cannot and we should not imitate Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is going to be a more gradual process for us. We will have to maintain patience and await for that kind of madness in our consciousness. It's good to know whether this
certain outcome of chanting, is possible or not possible. When one comes to the stage of becoming ecstatic by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, it is great!
jagannatha swami nayana patagami bhavatu me
We pray like that to Sri Krsna Caitanya who did that to Jagannatha Swami, who are One and the same Lords. “May we see Your glances, Oh! Could we have Your darsana wherever we look?” This is the ultimate result of chanting with love. This is the desired goal.
If our words are fully Krishna conscious then by those kind of words we may be gifted with full development or evolution, that is Krishna consciousness. We become Krishna conscious by chanting …
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
We should have faith like that. Not to have faith in the chanting of the holy names of the Lord is offence number ten. What is that faith? It is that this chanting of Hare Krishna could make me fully Krishna conscious, allow me to take darsana of the Lord. His holy name could bring me back home, back to Krsna. This is certain. It is not exaggeration – harinama nikalpa. It is an offence when we don't have faith like that Oh! Really! The holy name could do that? We should develop that kind of faith, that kind of understanding. You are welcome to chant the holy name with that
kind of understanding.
We Gaudiya Vaisnavas, including our leaders like the six Goswamis of Vrndavana were chanters of the holy name, but they never claimed that, ‘I am in Krsna now. I am with Him. I got Him. I caught Him.’ Mostly they expressed the feelings of separation from the Lord. ‘He Radhe! Vraja devike ca lalite he! Nanda suno kuttah' Where are you! Where are you? Where are you? This is the question. So the more we chant, the more intensely we would be enquiring, wondering where
is Krsna. Where could I see Him? When am I going to see Him? Why am I not seeing?
Caitanya Mahaprabhu also expressed those feelings. As He was chanting He was trying to find Krsna, look for Krsna. Sometimes he would ask Gadadhar, ‘Where is Krsna. I have to meet Him. Where is He?’ Then one time Gadadhar Pandit who is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's very close associate and friend, they grew up together said to Caitanya Mahaprabhu ‘Oh! He is in Your heart.’ As soon as Nimai heard that the Lord is in His heart, He started scratching His chest and with His
nails He was trying to dig deeper and open His heart like Hanuman had done. As He had heard the Lord is in the heart. ‘Oh really! The Lord is in my heart? Okay, I will look inside My heart.’ Then He started trying to open His heart and He was harming Himself and scratching and there was blood oozing from His chest.
Sacimata was not far from this scene, She was watching what her Nimai was doing, digging deeper into His chest and wanting to see the Lord in the heart. The way in which He was attempting to do so – scratching. She was certainly very concerned and worried. But then she also noticed what Gadadhar said next and that gave some relief to Sacimata. Gadadhar Pandit said ‘No! No! Not in the heart . Look, He is outside, He is there. Don't look inside the heart .’ So
Gadadhar Pandit just distracted Caitanya Mahaprabhu from what He was attempting to do, trying to look for the Lord in His heart. In that way Nimai stopped scratching and harming Himself. Then He was looking outside some distance away for the Lord. Sacimata was very pleased with what Gadadhar Pandit did and saved Nimai from harming Himself. She appreciated Gadadhar Pandit, ‘Gadai I am very happy with your advice and counselling that you provided Nimai with. I would like
you to always surround Nimai, my Nimai.Who knows when would be the next time He would be in trouble like this, harming Himself or be so unpredictable these days. So you Gadai, you Gadadhar please be always around my Nimai, please always protect Him.’ These are acintya or inconceivable pastimes of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, but the message that we should get from this is that chanting of the holy name is a process of reviving our dormant love for Krsna and it has happened in the past so many times. Many devotees have chanted Hare Krishna and they have developed love for the Lord and revived their Krishna Consciousness. This is possible so Caitanya Mahaprabhu is also setting that example. As I said, we cannot imitate and do everything as He did, that's the difference between following in the footsteps and imitation.
Anukaran and Anusaran as we say in Hindi. But we should develop more and more faith in the process of chanting as we are awaiting the outcome which is Krsna prem, love of Godhead. Now we have little time left so we can turn our attention to the World Holy Name Festival, see what we could do or what you are doing or what you are not doing? We want to see if we can have a successful World Holy Name Festival. As the name says the World Holy Name festival is
worldwide and not just a local, regional or national affair. It is an international or global event.
We want to see this festival held and celebrated in a grand manner everywhere worldwide. This is for the sake of an inspirational statement from Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu to get inspiration to spread the holy name all around. We know from Caitanya-caritamrita how Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu said one time "I am the only Gardener here ami ekla matra kalakar and look there are so many fruits hanging down from the trees everywhere. There is also a lot of demand out there, but I am the only Gardener so how many fruits could I take. How many fruits could I distribute alone? Help! Help! Help! Distributors wanted. So Mahaprabhu was saying that He wants distributors. I want more and more. Where are the devotees? The devotees should step forward and fill up the baskets with these fruits. These fruits are Krsna prem, fruits of love of Godhead and then go everywhere.
sthan asthan nahi vichar
patra patra nahi vichar
Do not worry about who deserves or where to distribute, just distribute profusely everywhere in abundance, flood the world with the fruits of love of Godhead
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
That is what he is talking about golokera prema dhana harinama sankirtana which He has brought down into this world and the Lord wants to see that this is distributed. We want you, all those listening to us, who are part of this conference and those who are not listening to us and are part of this conference are also able to listen to the appeal of Mahaprabhu, appealing to you all that you step forward and fill up the baskets or pockets or bags or lorries with the fruits of love of Godhead, the holy name and go everywhere and distribute the holy name . Nagar bhaje everywhere – nagar adi gram – in every town every village.
During the chanting session some of you were reporting, posting your comments. The report from Mauritius Padayatris is that HH Kadamba Kanana Swami Maharaj is personally heading the World Holy Name Festival there. There are reports from Dubai Shyamalangi Mataji is arranging disciple gatherings and they have to do 64 rounds session for one day – today or tomorrow. The weekly programs are on Fridays in Muslim countries. So everyone is going to have a festival with all the
congregation and like that . I am getting reports from Muralimohan Prabhu from Ahmedabad.
He organised one day padayatra to inaugurate World Holy Name Festival and so many in Pune are going to some schools and getting the school children to participate in the World Holy Name Festival. Like that several reports are coming through. There are devotees in Russia. Through this conference they sent message to Saint Petersburg that they should organise a grand World Holy Name Festival there. Ram Leela Mataji from Solapur said that they are doing indoor chanting. My response is do outdoor chanting. Go in the streets and chant. Do nagar sankirtana. Like our Advaita Acarya who was not happy with Caitanya Mahaprabhu when He was doing indoor kirtana in Srivas Angan, Advaita Acarya wanted that the kirtana should be taken everywhere in the streets of Navadwip.
I am reading some encouraging reports, I am hearing and also getting emails during the day. Let’s stop here and get into action. Time to pack, get up and be substantial.
Gaur Premanande Hari Hari Bol!
19 SEPTEMBER 2019
JARE DAKHO TARE KAHO KRISHNA-UPADESH!
This is the time for the World Holy Name Festival so we could announce our scores that today we had 521 participants. During this festival we want to hear some scores, results, number of different festivals conducted, japa sessions you conducted or so many people chanting because of your arrangements. So we are reporting from this session there are 527 participants.
In Lord Caitanyas life and teachings, he has taught and shared His realisations that the chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare / transformed his life. He was no longer the same person as soon as he took up the chanting. As He took to the chanting after being initiated by Isvara Puri in Gaya, when He returned to Navadvipa, Mayapur, He was a completely changed person, upside down and inside out. He was changed. No one could recognise that He is the same Nimai Pandit. He does not even look like Nimai Pandit. Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave the credit to Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
All the changes in Him had taken place because of the chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra. So He was exhibiting all the symptoms to the extent that by seeing Him all the people around use to say Oh! Nimai has gone mad!
So then Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu went back to his Guru Maharaja asking, 'Kiba mantra dila gosai kiba Tara Bal, japite japite mantra karil pagal' Oh!dear Guru Maharaja, my Guru Maharaja, (doesn't have to say 'dear' to an honorable person). He asked what kind of mantra have you given? There is so much power in this! As I started chanting I have gone mad. I laugh, I cry and I roll on the ground, I become stunned and this happens and that happens. And I know that this maha-mantra has done this. So what a powerful mantra it is! Caitanya Mahaprabhu was also talking to devotees, Gadadhar Pandit and Mukunda Datta. Lord was saying to them,' I wasted my lifetime. I wasn't chanting like you. I wasn't a devotee like you. From your very birth you are chanting. You are dancing and you are happy realizing this
mellows of devotion'.
hari hari! biphale janama gonainu
manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya
janiya suniya bisa khainu
O Lord Hari I have spent my life uselessly. Having obtained a human birth and having net worshiped Radha and Krsna, I have knowingly drunk poison.(Dainya Bodhika Song 2 (Ista Deve Vijnapti) Narottama Dasa Thakura He was expressing sentiments like that. I remained busy in sastra and debates, teaching and learning the scriptures, lot of Vidyarjan, but I wasted My time. Why did I not take this chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra from early age childhood? He was having such thoughts and was sharing them with the devotees. So with this kind of light and expression Caitanya Mahaprabhu is expressing the glories of the holy name. He is establishing harer nama eva kevalam principal.
sambhavami yuge yuge (BG 4.8)
Lord has appeared to establish the Dharma for this age of Kali. We are seeing how Caitanya Mahaprabhu is establishing the accomplishment of the glories of the holy name, and Dharma for this age of Kali. We all have to chant. Specially this part is also sadhana. This is one way of chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna /Krishna Krishna Hare Hare /Hare Rama Hare Rama /Rama Rama Hare Hare.
We could say that this is 'Charity begins at home'. Charity begins with you! It begins with yourself. Mahaprabhu came with the gift of this Harinama and we should be giving this gift to our self. That is what we do when we do our Japa. We are drinking, gifting this holy name to our self and getting benefited. We are getting nourished and flourished as we do this. So certainly we have to do this. At the same time, it is certainly the will and wish of the Lord that we all chant. Those who hear the glories of the holy name understand harer nama eva kevalam. We should be chanting. But we should not be happy only with that. Okay, I am chanting, I am happy. Chant and be happy! But Mahaprabhu
did not want us only to be happy. Mahaprabhu is expecting and instructing all the chanters of the holy name, all those who are following him, all those who have taken up the chanting of the maha-mantra, Mahaprabhu's instructions all those are:
yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa
“Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krsna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land.” (CC Madhya 7.128)
This is the instruction of Mahaprabhu, Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is our Prabhu, prabhavashali, he is our master. So this is His order- yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesaamara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa. Srila Prabhupada said to me "yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa" when Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa, that includes Hare Krishna updesa also.
Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu's other famous statement, instruction or we could say desire is one which Srila Prabhupada would repeat again and again and again is
bharata-bhumite haila manusya janma yara
janma sarthaka kari’ kara para-upakara
“One who has taken his birth as a human being in the land of India [Bharata-varsa] should make his life successful and work for the benefit of all other people. (CC Adi lila 9.41)
If you have taken birth in Bharat varsa, and you wish to make your life perfect, you have to accomplish this, kara para-upkara. Do para-upkara. Do something good for others. Bahujana hitay bahujana sukhay. Do something for the benefit of others. Give charity, be charitable, magnanimous. Give out! So that is para-upkara which Mahaprabhu wants us to do. I will take some time to explain this. There are many devotees from overseas. They think , Oh! Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “bharata-bhumite haila…… but I was not born in India! I am not Bharatvasi! I am Mauritius vasi or Russia vasi or America vasi. I am from this sthan that sthan, Pakistan, Kazakistan and Australia – Astra sthan. Sastra and astras were kept for safety in the Australian continent. All followers of Gauranga Mahaprabhu wherever they are, they are Bharat vasis. There janma is bharata-bhumite haila. One time I was talking with Ekalavya Prabhuji about this and he said, “I am Bharat vasi because I was initiated in India. I took birth in India. Although I was born in America but my real birth, my spiritual birth was in India.” Then we could say that it doesn't matter wherever you were initiated, but as you were connected to this parampara , that's it. From that time onwards you cease to be an American, Australian or Canadian and your birth from there onwards is bharatvasi. This whole planet was Bharatvarsh – India. So this is the instruction of Caitanya Mahaprabhu to all of His followers regardless of their birth, from whichever country or continent.
So this para-upkara business is the propagation of the holy name. We would like to tell all those listeners, participants of this conference and those listening, that it is the time to do para-upkara. Be charitable. Give this gift of the holy name to others. Be charitable! So many things you could do, that we discussed, what the World Holy Name Festival organisers are expecting, about how to celebrate this holy name festival. So understand that, give out the holy name, distribute the holy name.
Just a few minutes ago I was observing a wonderful thing from Noida. Devotees have set up a booth. So many walkers and passersby were made
to sit down and they were chanting. That was a very beautiful scene to watch as I am seeing from the temple. I saw those devotees from Noida Temple preaching and doing para-upkara. Are you not seeing that the Lord is watching this? Do you think Gaurang is not watching or Radha Govind is not seeing the activities in that booth in the park? If I, who is just a tiny being am pleased by that then how much more pleased the Lord must be when He witnesses us doing this charitable work of spreading the holy name. So stay busy following Mahaprabhu order of chanting Hare Krishna and giving Hare Krishna to others. He ordered Haridas Thakur and Nityananda Prabhu,
suno suno nityananda, suno haridas sarvatra amar ajna koroho prakas prati
ghare ghare giya koro ei bhiksa bolo `krsna', bhajo krsna, koro krsna-siksa
Listen Nityananda, listen Haridas, This is My order. If you go from door to door and beg the people to take up this instruction of Mine, they should chant the name of Krsna, bolo Krsna bhajo Krsna, they should worship the Supreme personality of Godhead Krsna, koro Krsna siksa and they should read the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, the books which contain the teachings of Lord Krsna.
When this instruction was received from Mahaprabhu, Nithyananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur were on the job. They decided the target, Yes ! Yes! We want this Jagai and Madhai to chant. They made various attempts. One attempt was not successful , another attempt was also not successful, third attempt they were trying. They thought if personalities like Jagai and Madhai are influenced by chanting of maha-mantra, if they could be transformed, then this news will become the talk of the town. And even now 500 years after that this morning also as I am talking to you about them . It is the talk of the town then. Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur made it big news., Persons like Jagai and Madhai , as soon as they took up the process of the chanting of maha-mantra, they were changed persons. That's what happened.
Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur were thinking if this could be accomplished, if Jagai and Madhai could take up to the chanting , then you
know, the whole world will realise how great is Gauranga. Glories of Gauranga will spread, and with that glories of the holy name will also be
broadcasted far and wide. So they made them the target. They were successful. That was a demonstration of the power of the holy name and
glories of Gauranga.
We should also be in that spirit like Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur. We want to glorify the holy name. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki Jay! That is why they were out there on the mission of spreading the holy name. So stay busy, get more and more devotees to chanting together. Make efforts for that yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa That desa could be your town, that desa could be your colony, country , continent. See how big a circle you can form. Spread the glory of Gauranga , holy name and Prabhupad. Let the world know Prabhupada was the ambassador of the holy name. He gave the gift of holy name to the whole world.
We will talk about it more in Bhagavatam class this morning. Holy name is the topic for today.
18TH SEPTEMBER 2019
WORLD HOLY NAME FESTIVAL
Hare Krishna! Good Morning!
Well, I am back, I think I had never left also. There are 400 participants The number has certainly dropped. I see Senapati bhakta. We have Dhira Prashant Prabhu with us 10,000 miles away chanting. I think the number has dropped, so, not a good sign. We had reached 700 and now it is so low. Some of you, those who are chanting are there and those who used to be there are not here now.
I was up to chanting and you hearing, sometimes there was live and some of you were chanting with me and may be the rest of the times it was not live, maybe you were hearing recorded Japa and Japa talk. But regardless of whether there is live or recorded, we were expecting you to continue to chant. And if I am not there, devotees around the world are chanting with you. All over India is chanting with you. The power of association is there that way, so many together chanting. Japa conference is the power association.
As I said I am back in India. I arrived just today, early yesterday morning, namely 17 September and it was also the day in 1965 that Prabhupada had reached America. Prabhupada was in America on 17 September 1965. 17 September, yesterday was the beginning of a global festival called the World Holy Name Festival. I also kind of returned on the 17th to India to inaugurate that festival of the holy name. We would like you all to be part of this World Holy Name Festival from 17 to 24 September wherever you are – whichever continent, country. temple, Bhakti Vriksa. We want you all to actively participate in this World Holy Name Festival.
We have been celebrating this festival every year for the past twenty years. We want more promotion and more participation in this festival this time. I would like you to make sure that your continent, your country, your temple authorities are aware and awake – Gaurachanda bole. Gaurachanda is calling. We want to celebrate the World Holy Name Festival and I want you to remind your temple authorities about this World Holy Name Festival.
This is a GBC initiative. This is one of the programs the GBC wants to see spread. The GBC had asked me to be the coordinator of this event and I want you to assist me to make this World Holy Name Festival a grand success. We want to let the world know that Srila Prabhupada was the Ambassador of the holy name. Srila Prabhupada gave the gift of the holy name to the whole world so we want to remember Srila Prabhupada for this contribution. We would like to be grateful for what Srila Prabhupada has done for the whole world by giving this wealth of the gift of the holy name.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama
Rama Rama, Hare Hare
This holy name is the true wealth. You are just saying it, but I wonder if you realise that this is something very, very valuable. Your consciousness could get enriched by chanting, hearing and assimilating this Hare Krishna mahamantra. With great pride Srila Prabhupada preached and enriched the souls from the Western world. Prabhupada returned to India and he declared that he had made hippies into ‘happies’. This was Srila Prabhupada’s contribution – making hippies happies. How did Srila Prabhupada do this? He just asked them to chant the holy name and be happy. That was the exact same message to the world. If you wish to be happy, then there is only one way:
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha
In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” [Adi 17.21]
Time and time again I say that in order to be happy you have to be wealthy. It is an illusion that if you make more money, you will be happy and if you want to be happier, you have to make more money. It is a fact that you need wealth to be happy. Unfortunately the world does not realise what kind of wealth could make you happy. There is the mundane rupees, dollars, rubles which if acquired in abundance will make you happy. This is a big misunderstanding. You will have to realise what kind of wealth will make you happy. You have to come to the conclusion that spiritual wealth will make you happy. This spiritual wealth is Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna…… It is guaranteed that the more you acquire this wealth, the happier you will be. The rest of the world begins acquiring wealth at 9, 10 ,11 am., but the Hare Krishna devotees begin making money much earlier:Early to bed and early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy and wise.
The wise thing that the Hare Krishna devotees do, is that they wake up early. It is quiet and peaceful in the early morning hours and the air is fresh. This gives you good health. You become wealthy because you start acquiring genuine, eternal wealth. It remains your property forever and remains with you as your soul, unlike whatever other mundane wealth you acquire. Now is the time for the World Holy Name Festival. We talk about Harinama Mahatmya, the glories of the holy name. TAKE SHELTER OF THE DEVOTEE OF THE LORD
I have been on tour of the Western countries and we had gone to America , Europe and Russia.
abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah
ye 'nye ca papa yad-apasrayasrayah
sudhyanti tasmai prabhavisnave namah
I was reading this a few days ago during the flight. I came across an initiation class by Srila Prabhupada in 1968 somewhere in America. That time Jayapataka Dasa who was not a swami that time was getting initiated. During that initiation lecture Prabhupada quoted this verse. I was surprised as wealth could be the reason why Prabhupada was saying this while giving initiation in America. kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa …. The reason could be that some must have taken initiation who were from one of these countries. Then Prabhupada quoted this verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam, that refers to Mahabharata. It explains this is a kirata, the country is mentioned, far beyond Bihar and some countries from India also, Western countries. You know India is also included in chota Nagpur from Central India, that is Kirata, and Andhra is in India. Then hunandhra, that is Russia that is being mentioned. Then there is Germany and China. These countries are also mentioned in the Bhishma-parva of Mahabharata.
Mahabharata is the history of Greater India. That time the whole world was Bharat and the names mentioned were the countries or provinces spread all over the world. The reason why Prabhupada had quoted that verse during that initiation ceremony was that in this verse after mentioning the different countries, the Yavanas or Muslims, mlecchas I mean these races are the lower classes, lower than the sudras, in comparison . These are Kirata and Hunan, Andhra and Pulinda and Pulkasa , Yavanas and Khasad also. They are sudras, but Bhagavatam says wherever you are from, no matter how low class you are, you should take shelter of the devotees of the Lord. One who has taken shelter of the
Lord that is a devotee and if you take shelter of the devotee, such a devotee who has always taken shelter of the Lord then suddyanti – you will be purified. By prabha visnave namaha. Visnu is addressed here as Prabha-Visnu which means powerful Visnu. The Lord is powerful. You should come in contact with devotees of the powerful Lord, then that devotee will bring you to the shelter of Lord’s lotus feet. Then the devotees will explain also that,
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
moksayisyami ma sucah
Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.( BG. 18.66) Lord has made that promise if one takes shelter of the devotees of the Lord. That's why Prabhupada was also travelling fourteen times around the world, to this Hunan and Andhra also, to all these countries around the world, and people there were taking shelter of Prabhupada. They got some alternative. They came in contact with Srila Prabhupada, and Prabhupada presented Bhagavat-gita As It Is to them.
Then he had explained this verse, as it is. We have a variety of religions or so called obligations, but surrender unto Krsna – mam ekam saranam vraja. And if you do that what does Krsna say, aham tvam sarva papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. Surrender is complete when we do sarva-dharman parityajya. Not that you have given up some false dharmas, only so called dharmas, but all dharmas. Just take note of the word sarva, Lord has said, sarva- dharman parityajya and if you do that, if you leave all varieties of religions, then
aham tvam sarva papebhyo.
sarva-papebhyo moksayishyami ma sucah.
Then you will become free from reactions, of all the sins that you have committed. So this Bhagavatam verse does say this. Srila Prabhupada explained not just sinful people of this country and that verse of Kirata, Pulinda ye anye ca papaha….. and if there are any others which are not mentioned in this verse they also, everybody. There may be some more sinful people of some other country , which are not mentioned in this verse, they also will get purified.
vimuchayate nama tasmai, vishnave prabha namah
Srila Prabhupada was preaching on the strength of this verse, which strongly recommends to one and all to take shelter of devotees of the Lord. Devotees who are like acarya, siksa Gurus, diksa Gurus, Vartma pradarsaka gurus who take us to the siksa Gurus, which in turn introduces us to diksa Gurus. Diksa Gurus come in the parampara of the acaryas and connect us to that parampara. So it was proper that Srila Prabhupada was quoting this verse during the initiation ceremony of Jaypataka Prabhu. He was justifying initiation to someone, who was not born in a
Brahmin family, or ksatriya family. Prabhupada was also mentioning that according to the vedic vidhi, this initiation cannot take place. Yena sruti gochara ha. striyo vaisya tatha sudraha tryo na sruti gocharaha. They cannot be given initiation. We don't give this mantras to women, vaisya or sudras. But there is vaidik vidhi and there is Bhagavata vidhi. We follow the Bhagavata vidhi. Pancaratra. Pancaratiki
vidhi vina bhakti utpat eva ucchyate. So we follow Bhagavata vidhi. We follow Pancharatiki vidhi. But if we stick only to Vedic vidhi, then we cannot extend this initiation. And Prabhupada was also criticised by brahmins as he was giving initiation to Yavanas. He was giving them sannyasa. This all is nishiddha, according to the vedic vidhi. But we follow Bhagavata vidhi or pancaratra vidhi, which Srila Prabhupada preached all over the world. That preaching is continued.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu predicted that this holy name will reach every town and village. He predicted pritvite ace yay nagaradi gram sarvatra prachar hoibe more nama. So this was forecasted by Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Prabhupada worked for that. Till now preaching is going on. First they came in contact with Srila Prabhupada and then they came into contact with the holy name. So this is brahmande bhramite kon bhagyawan jiva guru krsna prasade pay bhaktilata bija. In this world, so many souls are becoming bhagyawan, fortunate as Prabhupada was bringing them in contact with devotees of Krsna.
These devotees are then , inspiring the souls, introducing them to holy name Bhagavat-gita and Bhagavatam. Introducing them to the Deities, Deity form of the Lord. Introducing them to Mayapur Vrndavan dhams, and introducing them to so many more devotees of Lord. Krsna's servants, Krishna's eternal associates.
Gauranga Mahaprabhu's associates. So this way everything is going on as explained in the Bhagavatam. 'Books are the basis', Bhagavatam is the basis, and this is the foundation. Bhagavatam teaches taking shelter of the devotees. These devotees will explain you how to take shelter of Krsna. And when they come in contact with the powerful Lord then – sudhyanti. The holy name is also powerful.
Namnam Kari bahudha nija sarva shaktis Lord has introduced all His energies into this holy name. Poorna sudha nithya mukta abhinavat Nama Namino. Take shelter of the holy name of the Lord as there is no difference between nama and nami. They are one.
So become Krishna conscious and make your life happy by taking shelter of the Harinama, and go back to Krsna.
15 September 2019
This morning the number of participants are big but we have had better figures when we crossed the 600 mark. We would like it to keep rising. Let us remind others, especially family members to join the japa conference. The face book page “Let’s chant together” is also there for you to visit.
I am not sure if Bhakta Ganesh from Pandharpur is getting others to chant with him but he has taken a vow to chant 1200 rounds during this month. Each day he will increase his rounds to reach this target. He will also complete a reading of
Bhagavad Gita slokas and read Krsna Book daily, and also offer lamps daily to Damodar.
Devarsi Narada Dasa from Croatia has joined us. He is offering lamps to Damodara. We are happy to see Prabhuji all the way from Croatia, Europe chanting with us. Manasi Gaur Mataji from Greater Noida says that she is drowning in the ocean of nectar. When I read this message I was reminded of the third verse from the Damodarastakam:
itīdṛk sva-līlābhir ānanda-kuṇḍe
sva-ghoṣam nimajjantam ākhyāpayantam
tadīyeṣita-jñeṣu bhaktair jitatvam
punaḥ prematas tam śatāvṛtti vande
Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krsna's babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: “I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion.” To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times.
During this pastime, the Lord drowns the Vraja vasis in the ocean of nectar, through His nectarian pastimes. Manasi is drowning in happiness also because she managed to get 60 old and new people to offer lamps to Damodara. It is my wish
that she keeps up with the good work.
Jaya Pancali Mataji from Pune regrets that she could not join the Parikrama or go to Vrndavan. This does not matter because she is in Pune, attending mangala arati, offering lamps to Damodara daily and reading Vraja-mandala Darsana, a chapter a day. She also reports that her parents arranged a programme in Jalgaon village where 300 attended that programme and offered lamps.
Paramatma Prabhu also noted about the lamp offering programme in Jalgaon but he has not given a report from Nagpur. We are yet to hear from him and will welcome that feedback.
Is there any news from Vrndavan or the Parikrama? We have managed to get the 30 days timetable. Today the devotees would have left Krishna-Balaram Mandir after mangala-arati, some 14 minutes ago. They normally leave the camp around 6 a.m. and they are heading to Bhataronda, then towards Akrura-ghata. They will stop for breakfast at the Birla Mandira after which they will walk through heavy traffic to Krsna-Janmasthana, the birthplace of Krsna where He appeared five thousand years ago.
I am missing Vrndavan and Vraja-mandala Parikrama. Because of the GBC meeting in Tirupati, I am separated from Vrndavan, but I am always thinking of Vrndavan and all the devotees who are on parikrama. You can also read about the parikrama today in Vraja-mandala darsana and be part of the parikrama.
The Padayatra from Noida to Vrindavan has just been completed. The devotees have been walking for two weeks from Noida to Vrndavan. The good news is that during this period, they distributed 4000 books. These figures will be very pleasing to Srila Prabhupada. Yesterday in Noida, there were 300 devotees who offered lamps at the temple.
Param Karuna Prabhu and Bhaktiniddhi from Nagpur have been inspired by Bhakta Ganesh and have pledged to chant 2100 japa during the month of Kartik. Maha Laksmi devi dasi got 75 people to offer lamps – I am not sure where she is from.
This is a great initiative.
So this is a wonderful season of Kartik especially for devotional practice and to make lots of profits. If it is a rainy season, selling umbrellas would be profitable. This month of Kartik is the best season for performing service especially hearing and chanting, reading books like Srimad-Bhagavatam, Vraja-mandala Darsana, and Krsna book. The month of Kartik is popular with Gaudiya Vaisnavas for accumulating profits. So we should take full advantage of this favourable time of Kartik. Of course distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books should be increased. You should buy a copy of Vraja-mandala Darsana if you do not have a copy. It is a season for reading and distribution of prasada. No spiritual function is complete without distribution of prasada. Share prasada with others. Invite your family and friends as Jaya Pancali Mataji’s parents have done with 300 devotees who got together his contacts and offered lamps. You could plan programmes at the various temples.
Invite the devotees to come in big numbers everyday. Let them be blessed by Damodara.
Sanathan Goswami’s Hari-bhakti Vilasa recognised this celebration and prescribes the offering of lamps during this period of Kartik. Here it is said that the offering of lamps will attract Lord Damodar. You become a recipient of the mercy of Karuna sindhu, Deena Bandhu Damodar during this month.
"In the month of Kartika one should worship Lord Damodara and daily recite the prayer known as Damodarashtaka, which has been spoken by the sage Satyavrata and which attracts Lord Damodara." (Sri Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.16.198).
This is an amazing Damodarastakam. This astakam was spoken by Satyavrata Muni in a conversation with Narada Muni and Saunaka Rishi and can be found in the Padma Purana of Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa
lasat-kuṇḍalam gokule bhrājamanam
parāmṛṣṭam atyantato drutya gopyā
To the supreme controller, who possesses an eternal form of blissful knowledge, whose glistening earrings swing to and fro, who manifested Himself in Gokula, who stole the butter that the gopis kept hanging from the rafters of their storerooms and who then quickly jumped up and ran in retreat in fear of Mother Yasoda but was ultimately caught – to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances. (Verse 1).
This is a very special verse of pure devotion and humility where the devotee begs for the mercy of Damodara. The verse is replete with devotion and we are encouraged to look at the deeper meaning of this verse.
So Satyavrata Muni is remembering this pastime of Damodara and the day when the Lord stole butter in Nanada Bhavan within a particular pastime (Makan Chor). He quickly mentions that the Lord is wearing earrings and He is moving quickly and the earrings are dangling and dazzling as He runs away from Yasoda. You will have to read in greater detail about this in the 10th Canto, Chapter 8 of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Sukadev Goswami describes this pastime and offers deeper insight into this pastime.
Satyavrata Muni says that Krsna is stealing and eating butter and also distributing to the monkeys. Mother Yasoda is following him with a stick in hand as he tries to escape. He jumps down from the mortar and runs away from His mother. When Yasoda managed to catch Him, Krsna started trembling and crying with fear. His two lotus hands were wiping away the tears and he was full of fear because he was caught and did know what kind of punishment was imminent. He is taking heavy breaths and His body and lips are trembling. At the same time Satyavrata Muni sees the three marks on Krsna’s neck that demonstrated the speciality of Krsna’s form.
There is a locket around His neck which was moving, dangling and shaking as Krsna’s body was trembling because of the immense fear. Yasoda was able to catch hold of Him and was able to bind Him to the mortar. This is only possible because of her love and devotion for her darling Damodara that she was able to deal with Him accordingly.
rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mṛjantam
sthita-graivam dāmodaram bhakti-baddham
Upon seeing His mother's whipping stick, He cried and rubbed His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes were fearful and His breathing quick, and as Mother Yasoda bound His belly with ropes, He shivered in fright and His pearl necklace shook. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances. Satyavrata Muni concludes this second verse of this pastime by offering the third verse:
itīdṛk sva-līlābhir ānanda-kuṇḍe
sva-ghoṣam nimajjantam ākhyāpayantam
tadīyeṣita-jñeṣu bhaktair jitatvam
punaḥ prematas tam śatāvṛtti vande
Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krishna's babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: “I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion.” To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times.
By the performance of this lila the Lord is filling the kundas (lakes) with anand, and all the residents of Vrndavan and associates are drowning in the nectar of His pastimes.
Continue this meditation, you could read more, hear more and remember more.
We will continue tomorrow.
14 SEPTEMBER 2019
( Part 1)
SOUL IS THE CHANTER
We are conducting this japa conference from Ekachakra Gram Dhama. This is in Russia. This is for the information of all those who are with us on the conference. We have devotees from all over the world right now chanting with us. The name of this conference is,’Let’s chant together'. We have devotees from Surat in India. Gaur Krishna, Gaur Kishore Das, Padmavati from Holland is chanting, Madhavi Gopi from Thane Mumbai, Bombay is chanting with us. Vaibhav from Pune.
Pune you know and like that Devahuti is chanting with us. Like that we have devotees from different places. Someone from New York is chanting, Dhira Govinda is from New York, New Jersey is chanting with us, Dr. Shyamsundar Sharma from Nagpur, India is chanting with us. Dhira Prasanta from Australia is chanting with us. And like that we have some thousand devotees chanting with us. We chanters are benefited by the power of the global association of chanters.
Radhe Gopal is from America. There are devotees from Mauritius with us and from Dubai. So this is a humble attempt in service of the holy name and service of the chanters.
We chant together and then we talk a little bit about the chanting. Jiva Jago. We also remind sleeping souls to please wake up. Lord Gauranga is calling as we say Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna. Gaura is calling us to get up, time to wake up. In a fully wakeful state only we could chant the holy name of the Lord attentively. So the let’s chant together japa conference on zoom is like a daily japa retreat. You know devotees around the world organise Japa Retreats. Like our Sacinandana Swami Maharaja and so many others who organise japa retreats. They go to some location like Barsana or somewhere. They gather together for a week or so and they conduct japa retreats with the aim on how to chant better, how to improve our chanting or how to do attentive chanting. We do that on a daily basis here on the japa conference. We chant together on our conference and then we talk, give some hints, some tips, some reminders, do this during chanting, do that during chanting. Don't do this during chanting or even something that you should be doing to prepare yourself for chanting. So everyday we talk.
Today our chanting session is kind of sandwiched between the appearance day of Bhakti Vinoda Thakurwhich is just ending and the disappearance day of Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur which is just beginning. We are in the middle. So naturally the day reminds of Srila Bhakti Vinoda Thakur. All glories to him. Or Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur. There are devotees who before they begin chanting they offer their prayers to Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur to give all them
inspiration that is needed to chant. Gauranga himself declared Haridas Thakur as Namacarya Haridas Thakur. Lord made him Acarya of Nama, Acarya of the holy name. Acarya is that person who teaches by his own example. If anyone amongst Caitanya Mahaprabhu's associates or representing his parampara who inspires the whole world like anything. Then we have to accept that person is Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur. He chanted three hundred thousand names daily.
People were trying to stop him from chanting, ‘Stop chanting otherwise we will beat you or we kill you.’ Regardless of all the opposition and threatening beating, he went on chanting. He said, ”You may beat me or cut me into khanda khanda. He used the word khanda khanda. You may cut my body into pieces still I'll not stop chanting." I was thinking when I remembered this statement of Haridas Thakur. He is also trying to say that it is not that his body is chanting. It is his soul that is chanting.
The soul cannot be cut into pieces. The soul cannot be burnt with fire. So Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur's soul is chanting and in no way can that soul be beaten or dried off or killed or burnt. No force, no element, no party in this world could stop his chanting. The chanter of the holy name is the soul. We should realize who the chanter of the holy name is? Who is chanting? Who is speaking? Today's speaker is! What is that company, that company speaker is today morning's speaker. Is it or is that the speaker or one who is speaking in the mike is the speaker. One who is
actually speaking in the mike is the actual speaker not that one in the speaker box.
Similarly our mouth is the speaker. A mouth cannot speak, it's like that compared with that speaker box. One who is speaking in the microphone is the soul. The soul is speaking, chanting and like that the body cannot function without the presence of the soul . Who is hearing? Is the ear hearing?
The soul is hearing, hearing and chanting is done by the soul and remembrance of course. The body cannot remember. It is dead matter . This matter at some point through some ways enters into the body. We eat and the body is built. So Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur as he was chanting and no matter what opposition there was, what attempts were made to stop his chanting, he did not respond to that. He kept on chanting.
During old age he did not chant his prescribed rounds and Mahaprabhu always sent mahaprasada to Haridas Thakur's Siddha Bakul. Siddha Bakul. Bakul is a tree. The Lord was trying to take care of Haridas Thakur. He was not taking care of himself. Mahaprabhu took Jagannatha Swami's Toothbrush, Jagannatha Swami when he gets up he brushes his teeth. It's a branch of the Bakul tree with which he rubs. So one day Mahaprabhu came with that Bakul branch. And he planted that where Haridas Thakur used to stay and that grew into a nice shady tree. Otherwise Haridas Thakur went on with his chanting all day long under the scorching heat of the sun.
He was old and Gauranga was caring for him. And now under the shade of the tree Haridas Thakur was chanting. Mahaprabhu sent Jagannatha mahaprasada for him. Haridas Thakur said refused as he had not finished his prescribed number of rounds. How could he eat? Every time Caitanya Mahaprabhu would visit him. As you chant you are welcoming the Lord.
The Lord appears to give his darsana. This is the part of the Lila. The Lord is walking towards Haridas Thakur. If You take one step towards the Lord , as we chant Hare Krishna we are trying to get closer to the Lord. Lord is more eager to see us when we are eager to see Him. As we take the initiative, the Lord is taking a thousand steps towards us. Chanting will be perfected when we chant without offences. Then our chanting will be prayerful sudha nama, pure name will appear and the Lord as He is will be revealed unto us. This is yoga, Bhakti yoga or japa yoga. We are also yogis.
Since we chant we could be called japa yogis. Yoga means to link or to unite so with the help of chanting we are trying to connect with the Lord, unite with the Lord. We see in the life of Namacarya Haridas Thakur. This is what happened as he was chanting and chanting and chanting and chanting and not just quantity wise chanting which is kirtaniya sada hari. We should chant all the time but it's more about quantity. Namacarya Haridas Thakur was known for both his quantity and quality chanting.
13 SEPTEMBER 2019
( Part 3)
KRSNA’S NAME IS NON-DIFFERENT FROM HIS FORM
Go closer to the Lord. Be with the Lord. He is coming. When you follow yam niyam, asan pranayam pratyahar dhyan dharna, samadhi you are going higher and higher and getting closer and closer. Wherever we go, we have to do to the right
things at all these different levels. At every step we have to watch out whether we are doing it correctly. We are endeavouring all the time to do it right. Day after day when we are endeavouring, then Krsna will give us intelligence.
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te
To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. (BG10.10) So that upayanti will come closer. That divine intelligence in right, intelligent direction and with the power of discrimination to reveal Krsna.
caksu-dan dilo jei, janme janme prabhu sei,
divya jnan hrde prokasito
prema-bhakti jaha hoite, avidya vinasa jate,
vede gay jahara carito
He opens my darkened eyes and fills my heart with transcendental knowledge. He is my Lord birth after birth. From him ecstatic prema emanates; by him ignorance is destroyed. The Vedic scriptures sing of his character.(Verse 3,Guru Vandana) Our spiritual master will reveal it into our heart. We are really wanting to know how to do this right, whether it is right or wrong, then you will be provided with the answer. God has His ways to get back to you or reciprocate with you, respond to you, through some devotees, through some scripture, or when you read something.
It clicks suddenly. Suddenly some light comes, Oh! now I know.
Question: Should we chant Panhatattva pranam mantra before we start chanting?
Answer: The mantra to Pancatattva should be chanted. Srila Prabhupada would say that the Pancatattva mantra is also a maha-mantra. Hare Krishna maha- mantra and Pancatattva Maha-mantra. So Pancatattva maha-mantra is chanted before we start chanting Hare Krishna. We pray for Their Mercy, to chant without offences, to chant with attention, or to forgive us for any offences we have committed. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is kinder and He is not alone. He has come with the whole team. Without Their mercy, we would not be successful. We beg for Their Mercy.
patita-pavana-hetu tava avatara
mo sama patita prabhu na paibe are (From Prarthana, by Srila Narottama Dasa
Thakura – Verse 2)
You are patit pavan and I am patit. Patit pavan – purification, you purify me. I am patit and you do pavan, purify me. mo sama patita prabhu na paibe are.
Pancatattva also includes Gaur Bhakta Vrinda. Srivasa Adi Gaur Bhakta Vrnda is headed by Srivas. All the others are also part of the Pancatattva. We could also approach those devotees – the spiritual master or some other senior devotees. Approaching them and beg for their Mercy. We say:
kripa-sindhubhya eva cha
vaishnavebhyo namo namah ( Vaisnava pranam mantra)
Same thing is here. Vancha kalpataru.… Patit – fallen, pavanebhyo – purify. You are competent to lift me up, purify me O! Vaisnava Any other questions? Or I was thinking , tomorrow also we will do Japa. We could do some questions-answers session. We will not do Japa-talk, but have a dialogue. So come with your question. We will take one quick question from the back.
Question: While chanting should we concentrate on the name or the form of the
Answer: Sound is Krsna and form is Krsna . So what we chant is the name. From name comes the form then comes the qualities of Krsna then the pastimes of Krsna. In order to perform pastimes, Krsna requires devotees, His associates.
Also to have pastimes of Krsna He doesn't play pastimes in the air. He does that on land , His abode or dhama , which is all part of Krsna, non different from Krsna. So name and form are non different. Should I just focus on form? The name or on the form? The very question is ignorant. Because of ignorance it arises. The understanding is that, 'name is form'.
nama cintamanih krsnas
purnah suddho nitya-mukto
The holy name of Krsna is transcendentally blissful. It bestows all spiritual benedictions, for it is Krsna Himself, the reservoir of all pleasure. Krsna’s name is complete, and it is the form of all transcendental mellows. It is not a material name under any condition, and it is no less powerful than Krsna Himself. Since Krsna’s name is not contaminated by the material qualities, there is no question of its being involved with maya. Krsna name is always liberated and spiritual; it is never conditioned by the laws of material nature. This is because the name of Krsna and Krsna Himself are identical.(CC Madhya-lila 17.133) Name and form are abhinna. Bhinna means different. Abhinna means non-different.
Nama namino, there is no difference between nama and nami. Nama is name, and nami is Krsna the Lord. His name is Krsna. And he is Krsna. Name and He are non different. When you are hearing, you should be meditating on the form of the Lord. Nama is Nama Prabhu. The name is a person that is why we say Nama Prabhu, Krsna Prabhu. We should feel , I am a soul and He is my Prabhu, my Lord. Name and He are non different. We should be meditating on name form, qualities, pastimes, abode and devotees. Radharani is a devotee. Gopis are devotees. Lalita Vishakha are devotees.
When we are chanting 'Hare Krishna', we are praying to the holy name. By your own sweet opulences which are of various kinds, mam cittam, my consciousness be attracted , by your opulences. Lord's opulences are, described in whole tenth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. There various opulences are described.
The six opulences are that He has full strength, full fame, wealth, knowledge, beauty and renunciation. These are all His opulences. The chanter is saying, which we talked while mentioning commentary of Gopal Guru Goswami. He has written a commentary on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and this is his commentary. The commentary is a prayer which is explaining each name. Hare , he is explaining , ' O Lord! Let my mind be attracted to you. madhurya, I want to be attracted by your madhurya. Lord Sri Krsna has rupa-madhurya. His form is Madhur.
adharam madhuram vadanam madhuram
nayanam madhuram hasitam madhuram
hrdayam madhuram gamanam madhuram
madhuradhi-pater akhilam madhuram
1) His lips are sweet, His face is sweet His eyes are sweet, His smile is sweet His heart is
sweet, His gait is sweet—Everything is sweet about the Emperor of sweetness! (Sri
Madhurastakam Verse 1)
Everything about You is sweet. You are ‘madhuradhipati’, the Reservoir of all sweetness. His form , rupam madhuram, rupa-madhurya , venu- madhurya, leela- madhurya, prema-madhurya. Krsna is known for this four madhuryas. Very
distinguished features of the Lord. I want to be attracted by all these opulences.
Seva yogyam kuru. Please engage me in your devotional service. Srila Prabhupad simplified this commentary. He explained, while chanting devotee is thinking , 'lord! or o Radharani ! I am yours. Please engage me in your devotional service.' Seva yogyam kuru. Make me fit to serve You.
ei nivedana dhara, sakhira anugata koro
seva-adhikara diye koro nija dasi
Tulasi Krishna preyasi name namah
I beg you to make me a follower of the cowherd damsels of Vraja. Please give me the privilege of devotional service and make me your own maidservant. (Tulasi Kirtana, Verse 4)
Tulasi is very dear to Krsna. He likes her. Make me eligible. This is also a part of the prayer, while chanting the holy names. All these thoughts , they emanate from Hare Krishna Hare Krishna…… When we say Hare Krishna we have said
everything. Everything that could be said or spoken, is uttered when we say Hare Krishna because this Hare Krishna which is Radha-Krsna contains everything. It contains all the knowledge that exists.
John 1:1 is the first verse in the opening chapter of the Gospel of John of the Bible which reads: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
In the beginning there was the word – shabda and that was with the Lord. That word could be Hare Krishna. That word is God and the Bible says the word is God. So Hare Krishna is God. It is not just the empty word. Prabhupada explains, ‘ In this world the name and the object are two different things. If you are thirsty and you go on saying Water! Water! Water! That won't quench your thirst. Or if you want to eat some sweet mango and you go on saying, Mango! Mango! You are not going to experience the sweetness of the mango as the word mango and the actual mango are different. But here the name is the object – Hare Krishna Hare Krishna is Krsna.
JAPA-TALK/ 12TH SEPTEMBER
(Part – 2)
Bhakti Vinod Thakura explains that inattentive chanting is the cause of all the offences we commit. After reciting the ten offenses before we start chanting what do we say at the end? We say that the goal of life is to chant Hare Krishna every devotee who wishes to obtain the goal of life which is to attain Krsna should be chanting attentively. So that is the defect. We may be sleeping everyday during chanting. Sleeping or sleepy are two separate things. Sleeping is fully sleeping. You are in bed and sleeping. Sleepy means you are half asleep, getting up in between and trying to chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare sssssss….. That's sleepy which is half asleep. You are inattentive.
It is an offence. When we say Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, that means we are calling Krsna. You called Him so he has come, but you are not there to receive Him. You called , but if you are sleepy, you are not there to receive the Lord. Thank you for responding to my appeal, my call. I called and You have come. I pay my obeisances to You. Please have a seat. Let's talk. Let's be here, I am going to take Your darsana. So instead of reciprocating or dealing with the Lord, like that, what happens when you are sleepy, you have called and He has come paying attention to you. He is at the door, ringing the doorbell. I am here! I am here! In the meantime you are off, you are out of station or you are sleeping or your mind has gone somewhere else even though you called Him. I am just saying that this is something that we do over again and again and again. So we have to do it right.
You are not sure whether you are doing it appropriately, the way it is expected and desired, and if you are not sure you should enquire whether this is correct or wrong. There are so many aspects of chanting. Being in samadhi or fully absorbed. The level that we wish to attend. That's the final step of the ladder. We have to make sure that of all the previous levels we are doing things correctly. I said yesterday that we could apply this ashtanga yoga of Patanjali, which Sri Krsna has explained in the sixth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. We should aim at that meditation because ours is mantra meditation. Ashtanga yogis maybe meditate on paramatma.
Our meditation is on Radha Krsna. Like this meditation, – yam niyam. Do this! Don't do this! It means following the four regulative principles. Don't do this! No meat eating; no fish eating; no this; no that! This is yam. If you do that Yamraj will come. So that's yam and niyam – they are all positive rules that you are expected to do. There
is vidhi and nishedh. Some prohibitions are there like, ‘Don't drink and drive' 'Drive on the right side' in India. So vidhi and nishedh. In English we say do's and don'ts.
Or paap and punya.
Yam niyam then there is asan. We were talking briefly yesterday, 'sit properly'. We are sitting in sukhasana or padmasana or vajrasana. These are the correct asanas for chanting. Yam niyam aasan, pranayam, which is controlling your breath. You take a deep breath and chant….
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
… once, twice, thrice. Take a deep breath and chant one mantra, two mantras, sometimes some devotees manage five mantras in one breath. Create a rhythm. So breath control results in mind control. Breath control has a connection with mind control. They are closely related. This is in the mode of goodness. Take a deep breath and chant. There is passionate breath. You have a passion for different kinds of breaths. Your breathing is fast and the mind is also moving fast. Or there is ignorant breath. It may be deep. Our whole nervous system may be weak. Then the blood in the lung is reaching your brain. Then you feel fresh and alert. If the blood supply is not reaching the brain, maybe when we eat too much, the blood supply is going to the digestive system. All the blood is directed to wherever there is activity.
So the blood supply to the brain is low then you are sleepy. Specially after a meal you feel sleepy right? After a full meal, isn't it? Because the blood is directed towards the action point which is the stomach. The body is a machine. We have to know how it functions. Part of that machine is the mind. It's a part of the machine.
Our body is made up of the mind also. The body is made up of intelligence also. We have to understand our mind and intelligence and its functions. How do they function favourably for chanting. Anyway so this is breathing or pranayam. We should pay some attention to this. Yam niyam aasan pranayam and pratyahar.
We know there is atyaharah.
atyaharah prayasas ca
jana-sangas ca laulyam ca
sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati
One’s devotional service is spoiled when he becomes too entangled in the following six activities: (1) eating more than necessary or collecting more funds than required; (2) overendeavoring for mundane things that are very difficult to obtain; (3) talking unnecessarily about mundane subject matters; (4) Practicing the scriptural rules and regulations only for the sake of following them and not for the sake of spiritual advancement, or rejecting the rules and regulations of the scriptures and working independently or whimsically; (5) associating with worldly-minded persons who are not interested in Krsna consciousness; and (6) being greedy for mundane achievements. ( NOI verse 2)
So like this there is sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati – 6 things could destroy your devotional life. That statement in the Nectar of Instruction begins with atyaharah. atyaharah means ati aharah too much of eating. 'Ati' means too much, too much of eating. Too much consumption. In the ashtanga yoga process the fifth step is pratyaharah which means countering. We have done atyaharah so now we have to do pratyaharah Aharah means eating. Aharah means not only that the tongue eats, but our eyes and our ears also eat. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur explains in his book Bhaktyaloka. All our senses have their own kind of food. Objects of senses are the food of the senses. shabda, sparsha, rupa, rasa, gandha, the shabda- sound, sparsha – touch, rupa- the form, gandha – the smell. So those are our senses.
We are bhakti yogis. We are japa yogis. Japa is a yoga. Japa yogis have to work on pratyaharah. And that it may not necessarily be during chanting time only. There is a preparation for chanting. I have been saying this always, for tomorrow's chanting we have to prepare today.
Whenever we are not chanting, we have to prepare for the next time for tomorrow,. Pratyaharah means minimising the consumption of the sense objects in quantity and quality. So this is pratyaharah. What to see what not to see, what to hear , what not to hear, how much to hear, what to speak and what not to speak. Krsna's devotees hear about Krsna.Like that all the senses could be employed in the service of the Lord. They are controlled when employed. So this is mind control, sense control. This has to be done. It's a part of pratyaharah. This of course is done with the help of the intelligence. Chanting is the activity of intelligent persons.
yajanti hi su-medhasah
In the Age of Kali , intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the name of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions. (CC Adi lila 3.52)
If the chanter wishes to be a successful chanter of the holy name, he has to be intelligent. He has to discriminate right from wrong. This is right and this is wrong. This is the pratyaharah path. When the mind and senses are involved, intelligence has to keep an eye on the mind and senses. And intelligence has to give direction to the mind. Do this! Don't do this! Shut up! Intelligence should guide like that.
As soon as we see a photo of Radha and Krsna, the intelligence tries to see the form which says, 'The Lord is standing before you. Here is the Lord of my heart.’ Intelligence has to do this. I have lot of discriminations, do – don't, quantity – quality is evaluated, ascertained. So these are all preparations. Yam, niyam, asan, pranayam, pratyahar dhyan, dharma, and samadhi. We are getting closer to samadhi, total absorption and meditation.
After the 5th stage we are getting closer, till then it was all preparations. Final act of concentration, meditation is to retain, be more focused. By now the mind is free from contamination and is more under control, controlled by the divine intelligence. So it tries to retain Krsna, Krsna's form, Krsna's qualities and is focused on Them.
JAPA-TALK 11TH SEPTEMBER 2019
Part – 1
YOUR FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS
We have chanted for some time now. Keep chanting. Don't chant now. I meant keep chanting everyday that's the right thing to do. That’s authorised and the strongly recommended activity or karma for this age of Kali. Karma means our prescribed duty. Everyone’s prescribed duty is to chant the holy names of the Lord.
Our teachers insist on this activity. They say when you take the beads in your hands your future is in your hands. You prepare your future. You could have such a bright future. The activity of chanting the holy names of the Lord takes us back home. Where we live now is not our home, Pittsburg, Moscow or Sochi. These are not our homes. Where we came from we can go back. Back to Godhead, So chanting has that power and our future also depends on how we chant. If you are chanting, that is good. The most important thing is how you are chanting. Behind trucks nowadays there is written, 'How am I driving? Report bad driving to so and so number.’ Driving in the same lane is sane. If you are not keeping to the same lane then that is insane. The truck driver wants to know how he drives, whether he drives at a high speed or his driving is not right. He asks others to inform. As far as chanters go, we can ask the question – how is my chanting. You may not ask whether the chanting is right or wrong, but you can definitely ask how you are chanting. We can ask our seniors, those who are good chanters or we can refer to the scriptures or japa reform guide books by ISKCON devotees such as Sacinandana Maharaja, Bhurijana Prabhu, Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami Maharaja.
Such ISKCON leaders and gurus have come up with japa reform guide books. We can refer to them. Besides this in devotees’ Istagosti, in the gathering of devotees, this question could be raised.
guhyam akhyati prcchati
bhunkte bhojayate caiva
Offering gifts in charity, accepting charitable gifts, revealing one’s mind in confidence, inquiring confidentially, accepting prasada and offering prasada are the six symptoms of love shared by one devotee and another. ( NOI verse 4)
Rupa Goswami says. When devotees get together two of the six sadvidham. six ways of feeling or ways of getting along with each other should be discussed. They confidentially reveal their mind or get inspired from others – How are you Prabhu?
Am I troubling you? May I help you? Please help me or share some deep realization. There are difficulties all the time. Every time we approach someone for
sure we have a difficulty and we trouble them by telling our difficulties. That is not good. We should also be sharing good news or fruits of realization or such things that could inspire others who would like to hear, make others happy. If you share misery all the time your misery makes others miserable all the time.
The point we are making here is akhyati pṛcchati japa some questions. When we meet other devotees or a group of devotees we need to ask how is my chanting?
How to improve my chanting? Is it this way or that? Is it clear? Something that we do again and again and again we should be doing properly. Yoga, asanas, pranayam, astanga yoga, some yoga or something that we do everyday, day in
and day out Chanting we do everyday and we chant 16 rounds, 16 times of the same thing. Even when we chant one round, we chant the same mantra 108 times, Hare Krishna we repeat this 1000s of time everyday, if we are doing it correctly then we repeat it 1000s of times. I heard a person chanting behind me very fast. It was not clear. If we chant correctly we did it right . We benefit by 1000 times. If we chant incorrectly, the set back is also 1000 times.
CONCENTRATE ONLY ON SOUND OF MAHAMANTRA!
Summary of previous class. –
If we chant while walking then our mind also moves along with the body because of that our mind can’t concentrate on chanting. Guru maharaj was saying running around or walking is tamogun the mode of ignorance, standing is mode of passion and sitting down and chanting is mode of goodness. Guru maharaj also said we all can make our home into Goloka or Vaikuntha. If there are deities in the home, we can chant our rounds properly, if there is Tulasi and there photographs of the Lord, then your home gets converted into the dham, and everyday you are chanting in the dham.
Time factor is also important, morning time is the best time. There is a predominance of goodness in the morning, daytime is passion, and night time is ignorance. Countryside is in mode of goodness, living in the cities is in passion, and residing in in dirty places, dark, not well lit, bad smell is all in the mode of ignorance. So we should select properly. If we chant in the holy dham, we could chant in the holy dham then that is above the mode of ignorance and passion. More than that you could create dham like situation wherever you are. You can make your home into a dham, Vaikuntha or Goloka. One may have deities at home, photographs on the wall of devotees and deities, of past times of the Lord, there is a cow in the courtyard, there is tulasi plant in the courtyard or room, big pile of Prabhupada books are there, then that makes home into a holy place or Vaikuntha. If there are some devotees also chanting at home, then we could create dham like situation at home and chant. Then you could say that you are chanting in the dham. By chanting in the dham you have better access to the Lord. Chanting in the dham means, Lord resides there, so you are not very far from the Lord. You have a very easy access to the Lord. Lord is just in close proximity with you. Or chanting of
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
This chanting is called or when we are chanting, we are dialling Krishna’s number. There are 16 digits. This is a telephone number of the Lord. So, we are calling Hare Krishna, if you are calling in the dham then that becomes like a local call. Local call versus long distance international call. Long distance call sometimes we cannot hear properly, hello …. hello… hello, are you hearing? Can you hear me? Now the phones are improving thirty years ago, there used to be a struggle to hear what the other person is saying. Calling or telephoning in the dhama is a local call. Calling from same town not long distance so you can hear properly. Also, local calls are cheap sometimes free, long distance calls are very expensive. So we could & we should be in the dhama or create a situation like dhama wherever we are chanting everyday could be made like a dhama. So, these various things that we are talking is for we have to improve our chanting. Chant with meaning. We have to do more attentive chanting, attentive, or we should hear what we are chanting. Whether mind is in that situation or mind is free, more free, and not preoccupied or engaged, already mind is engaged, in so many thoughts and new thoughts are also coming. So we are wherever we are, we are running, talking doing so many things, and if you are sleeping then you are chanting is off. Then we have to be observant. We have to hear, hear the holy name. And not do mental japa. There is something called as mansik japa. Chant in the mind. Gaytri Mantra that we chant, the brahmins chant, should be chanted in the mind. That is allowed, gaytri mantra has to be chanted in the mind. Within the mind you chant and hear, imbibe the, meaning & spirit within. But chanting of Hare Krishna, there is a sravanam Kirtanam and smaran. We have to hear, sravanam. If there is no chanting then how could we hear? In order to hear- sravanam we have to do kirtanam. Srila Prabhupada used to say that tongue must vibrate. We have to use our lips. I don’t know how you chant. Sometimes there is no chanting and because you are not chanting there is no hearing. Or instead you are not hearing Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, you hear some other sounds as atmosphere is filled with the sounds. There are so many sounds all around. So, if we do not make any sound, Hare Krishna sound vibration and if we don’t hear that, they are just quietly chanting then our ears are going to be hearing some other sounds which are there coming in your direction. During chanting we don’t want to hear anything else, but hear the Hare Krishna sound. So, we have to create the sound, vibrate the tongue. Say
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare.
We hear while we are chanting. there are so many other sounds, which are forced upon you, imposed upon you and you fall prey to that, you are forced to hear those sounds. But our decision and determination should be, that I want to hear the Hare Krishna sound now and nothing else. If we don’t chant & hear Hare Krishna sound, then not only we will end up in hearing other sounds but we also will end up hearing so many sounds of our mind. Mind is making so many sounds within & is always busy. Weather sounds or, sounds from within the mind bla bla bla…. Our mind is thinking all the time, what happened last night and what happened yesterday, he did this to me and he did that to me, I have got hurt. All these thoughts sounds are bombarded. Thoughts, thought is a sound. So, during chanting we don’t want to hear any other additional non-Krishna sounds. We don’t want to hear our minds sounds, minds thoughts which may be are not Krishna conscious thoughts. They may be ignorant thoughts or passionate thoughts and goodness thoughts but not transcendental thoughts. But we want to create new transcendental thoughts in the mind. Not hearing the outside thoughts and not hearing mind thoughts, but here new thoughts in the mind by chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. We want this chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna arousing, reviving our dormant love for Krishna. Sravanam kirtanam Vishnuhu smaranam. Hearing and chanting leads to remembering. Say Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, hear Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, and remember Krishna in the mind.
Prabhupada also said during one recorded Japa talk, that “sit properly!” So, he didn’t elaborate or explained what sitting properly is, but he just said sit properly. So, we know from the sastras and 6th chapter of Bhagavad Gita, the meaning of “sit properly”. What’s the meaning of sitting properly is explained in the sixth chapter of Bhagavad Gita. So, sitting properly also explains about an asana. That is very important in the process of meditation. Yam ,niyam, aasan ,pranayam ,pratyahara, dhyan, dharana, samadhi. Samadhi is the eighth and ultimate goal of meditation, but it has 7 previous parts of meditation. So, for the Bhakti Yogis also, this process is applicable and useful. Asana is part of the asta-anga, there are eight parts. One of them is asana. For japa or mantra meditation sleeping is not the asana, as that is savasana. Sava means dead. Lying like a dead body so one asana is called savasana. No lying down, that is not the asana. Tadasana is also not the asana for chanting like the Hiranyakashipu who was standing with the arms stretched. But sitting is a right asana or right posture. Sitting like this is called sukhasan. You are relaxing so, it is called sukhasan. Then there is also padmasana, lotus like, take your one feet up from fold of other leg, your soles should be upwards. It’s difficult aasan. There is also vajrasan, like this Prabhu is sitting. Hanuman sits like this. So, there are few asanas, like that. Radhanath maharaj sometimes sits & chants in these asanas. Sukhasan or padmasana or vajrasana. That’s the sitting properly for chanting.
You all are here for Russian festival, Sadhu-Sang festival, near the banks of black sea. Kala Samudra. Kala is black. Lot of rushis have arrived here in Russia. Russia or Rushayaha the name comes from the plural of rushi. Muni – munayaha, rushi – rushyaha. One time this was the land of rishis. There were so many rushis, and that’s how the land was called Rusayaha, which became Russia. Moscow, comes from Moksha. Capital where one gets moksha or liberation. Where Rushi – rushyaha were attaining moksha. So how many devotees are here, who are attending? 7000 rishis are here, 7000 devotees have gathered here, for the festival called Sadhu-Sang. Sadhu- sang is the name of the festival. We are addressing some of our followers from various parts. There are devotees from Ukraine and Russia also.
JAPA-TALK/ 9TH SEPTEMBER
RIGHT CIRCUMSTANCES WHILE CHANTING.
We are going to say a few words about chanting. You can come forward as we don't have a microphone system.
We are happy to chant with you this morning. I don’t know whether you are happy to chant with us. You are. Okay, so chant Hare Krishna and be happy. Keep chanting. The more we chant, the more we become happy and the better we chant. This japa conference is aimed at bettering your chanting. Let us chant together and let us chant better. Now let us improve our chanting. We take more lessons in chanting. We want to get some tips and hints to improve our chanting.
Chanting in the association of other devotees in itself is an improvement point and this is an additional point to improve our chanting. You know when we are chanting on this conference, you are not the only one. There are others who are also chanting and then you are kind of convinced that this must be the right thing to do. I am not the only fool chanting this Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. In that way our mind gets convinced that to chant Hare Krishna must be the right thing to do. I was going to make some correlations.
Anyway let’s make some observations. It is not that you cannot chant when you are standing or walking. You could and sometimes you have to chant while walking or standing, but the ideal situation or the right thing to do is to sit and chant. When our bodies move, our minds also move.
We will not elaborate on this, but try to understand and accept the point that when the body moves, the mind also moves. When a body moves it comes across more objects. We encounter more forms, more sounds, more different kinds of smells, more different things to touch. When the body moves it is equipped with the senses and they are the openings to our body, our existence to perceive, to know, to understand and to evaluate the things around. When we move or change the situation or circumstances around us then immediately the senses come in contact with different objects of the senses and all the senses feed the mind – manaha sasthani indriyani. All the senses are wired or connected to the mind. They kind of report to the mind and in agitation the mind will be thinking and from thinking comes feeling, and from feeling comes willing to do this or to do that, to eat or to smell or touch.
If you are sleepy, you have to stand up to drive away the sleep. While chanting if you are feeling sleepy then stand up and pace back and forth, walk a little bit. Sleeping is ignorance. Passion comes when you are growing above the ignorance. Standing, running or going around is passion while sleeping is ignorance. Understand these different positions. Sleeping is ignorance, sitting is goodness, goodness is sitting, standing up or moving around is passion. Go to the higher channel from a sleepy, ignorant state, stand up and arrive at a little passion. We have to transcended
ignorance. Then you could sit again which is in goodness and chant. That’s how work it out. We should not sleep. The moment that you are feeling sleepy, you could tell your neighbour ‘Please wake me up if I am sleeping’. Try to wash your face especially the part here around the temples. Cool it down. Put some ice there. When we are sitting and chanting then that situation is kind of steady. Things around you are not changing. Objects are fixed and steady. You don’t have to think conditionally.
It is also best that you chant in the same place every day. Then you don’t have to think more about the place. It is not a new place. You know all about it so there is no additional thought. We could chant at the same time everyday. We will have the advantage of the morning time as morning time is the best time. In the morning goodness is predominant. Day time is passion, night time is ignorance. Country side is goodness. The natural setting is goodness while living in cities is passion and residing in dirty, smelly places, dark, not well lit etc is ignorance.
So if you are chanting the holy name select a situation where ignorance, passion goes away and goodness stays. Or you could create a dhama-like situation wherever you are in your home. You can make into Vaikuntha or Golok. There are Deities at home. Have the photographs on the wall of the Deities and the devotees, the pastimes of the Lord. A cow in the courtyard or Tulasi next to you in a room, big piles of Prabhupad books. That makes your home into Vaikuntha or a holy place. There are some devotees also chanting to create Vaikuntha or Dhama-like situation. You could sit chanting in this dhama and you will have greater access to the Lord.
6 SEPTEMBER 2019
APPEARANCE DAY OF RADHARANI !
When we chant, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare /, we are praying to Radha and Krsna. Hare Krsna prayers say, ‘Oh Radhe! Oh Krsna!’, In that way we are directing our prayers to Radha and Krsna .We are addressing and begging for mercy and engagement. They would engage us in Their service.
nija-seva-yogyam kuru. ‘Please make me eligible to serve you Oh Radhe! Oh Krsna!’
Today is the appearance day of Radharani. Whenever Their names are chanted They appear, but today is the day of the birthday of Radharani. Today is Radhastami. Whenever we chant the name of Radha or whenever we say Hare Krishna it is also expected that Radha and Krsna would make Their appearance. They would appear Lord Hari says to Narada, "naham
vasami vaikunthe yoginam hridaye na cha, mad-bhakta yatra gayanti tatra tishthami narada" "I dwell not in Vaikuntha nor in the hearts of the Yogis, but I dwell where my devotees sing my name, O Narada." tatra tishthami – I reside where My devotees chant together. We are here to remember that if we chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra then Radha Krsna are appearing.
Radha Krsna were willing to reciprocate with us , deal with us , hear us and then in Their presence you could continue to pray to Them, address Them , beg for Their mercy.
satyam satyam punah satyam satya evam puna puna,
vina radhiko praade, mata prasade na vidyte
Sri Krsna says:"O Narada! I tell you truly truly, again truly, truly, again and again – without the mercy of “Radharani”, one cannot attain my mercy. (Narada Purana)
Radha, it is my prayer. It is the truth that without the mercy of Radharani we cannot get Krsna. We cannot get the mercy of Krsna, service of Krsna. We have to approach Krsna through Radharani. She is the leading servant of Sri
Krsna . Sri Krsna is purna purushottam and Radharani is purna sakti. Krsna is Purush and Radharani is Prakriti or alladhini sakti – radha krsna pran mora jugala kisor. Radha and Krsna are my life and soul, the goal of my life,
Narottam Dasa Thakur says. He is also praying , meditating, contemplating, desiring , aspiring to serve Radha and Krsna. This song could also provide a topic for our contemplation and meditation by chanting Hare Krishna.
kalindira kule keli-kadambera vana
There on the bank of Yamuna are lots of kadamba trees. I see one asana throne. Radha and Krsna are on that throne. I will approach Them, Their lotus feet.

I offer a garland of malti flowers. One could meditate that I am making garlands for Them but when I get there, it's very hot. Then I will offer chamara which will bring some cooling effect for Them. But when I get there,
lalita vishakha adi jata sakhi vrinda adnyay karibo seva caranravinda
Once I get there I will take permission from Lalita and Vishakha. ‘May I render service? Could you just give me something to do for Radha Krsna?’
vrindaranya kalpadrumadaha srimad ratnagaar simhasano sri sri radha
govinda devo presthalidhi sevyamanam smarami
That's the meditation. Radha and Krsna are seated and they are surrounded by asta gopis. So when I get there I will get permission from Lalita and Vishakha sakhi to serve Radha and Krsna. Lalita and Vishakha may check that this sakhi who wants to serve. They check with Radharani if it is fine to engage me. Because ultimately Radharani has to give permission to serve Them or serve Krsna. Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu said dasa-dasa-dasanudasaḥ.
So like that this devotee is the servant of the servant of the servant. Radharani’s sakhis are Lalita and Vishakha and their dasis and then their dasis. Like that there is a whole chain of parampara of devotees. In that chain of master and servant, gurus and disciples, the original guru is Radharani and in that parampara our spiritual master is also there and we are his servants.
mahatmanas tu mam partha
daivim prakrtim asritah
jnatva bhutadim avyayam
O son of Prtha, those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible. (BG 9.13)
Sri Krsna has described a Mahatma as one who has taken shelter of daivi prakriti, the divine energy and that is Radharani. He is a great soul. For us evan parampara praptam, the spiritual master is available unto whom we can
take shelter . We are the servants of the servant of the servant of the servant. Through them we ultimately serve Radha and Krsna. Our spiritual master gives us a mantra and we are formally initiated. First we receive the pranam mantra. You could offer your pranams or obeisances . And then the recommendation for Harinama diksa .Our spiritual master give us mahamantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Like that the spiritual master on behalf of Radha and Krsna, on behalf of all the others in that chain permits you to begin chanting Hare Krishna, which means serve Radha Krsna. While chanting Hare Krishna you continue to serve. We are chanting and begging Radha and Krsna for Their service. They are giving us service. The chanting of Hare Krishna is also a service. It is glorifying Radha and Krsna. When we say Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna we say a lot of things. We are reminded of a lot of thoughts, pastimes, form, beauty of Radha and Krsna, the dhama of Radha and Krsna.
There are commentaries on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra by various acaryas. Gopal Guru Goswami was one of them. He has commented on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra with an explanation and interpretation of each word of the maha-mantra. Gopal Guru Goswami was a contemporary of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He was a disciple of Vakreshwar Pandit and used to reside in Jagannatha Puri. We even have a commentary on Hare Krishna maha-mantra. There are commentaries on some verses of the Bhagavad- gita. Our acaryas have written commentaries. Like this there are commentaries on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra where it is explained in detail. On Hare there is a commentary. On Krsna there is commentary.
Swamadhuryen mam chittam aakarshay that is a part of commentary. When we say Hare Krishna, we say 'Krsna' then we are praying, – please attract my attention to Your madhurya or sweetness. You are the sweet Lord . Oh! When
would I experience that sweetness?
While chanting the names of the Lord, we have to absorb ourselves in remembering Radha and Krsna. It is not sunyavad or voidism. That is not the goal of our meditation. This is not impersonal meditation on some formless light or meditation on nothing. This is Hare Krishna mantra meditation. There are a lot of topics to meditate upon. Srila Prabhupada says when you talk of meditation immediately the first thing you do is decide on the object of your meditation. What are you going to be meditating on? Chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra is time to meditate.
This is a topic, object of meditation. Radha-Madhav, their madhurya lila, their pastimes, remembering their gunas – qualities, rupa – the form and name. Of course we want to meditate upon Radha and Krsna or Radha Krsna qualities,
or Their pastimes, form, but we are used to meditating on all wordly forms and beauties, activities and wonderings. We have millions of topics to talk and think about. That was our life thus far, before we came in contact with the
devotees , before we got initiated or before we started chanting, we had been meditating on all such topics. Everyone had been meditating on all such topics.
dhyayato visaayan pumsah
sangat sañjayate kaman
kamat krodho 'bhijayate
Krsna says in the second chapter of Bhagavad-gita, dhyayato visaayan , the whole world is meditating upon visaayan, objects of sense enjoyment. sangas tesupajayate, as one meditates upon wordly forms and activities and qualities
and or shabda,, sparsha rupa, rasa, gandha objects of meditation. Shabda means touch – object of meditation. Like that there are five types of objects of meditation. As one contemplates, meditates which one the whole world does day and night, sangas tesupajayate one becomes attached to that object and that gives rise to kamaha (lust) an intense will to enjoy those objects of sense enjoyment. First of all , acquire them and then enjoy. While chanting of Hare Krishna our previous meditation, previous asarama, our attachment to so many objects of sense enjoyment is going to be troubling us, going to be stumbling blocks for us. During chanting we the practitioners have to work on getting rid of it. That is the kind of meditation, remembrance. The mind is going to be dragged here and there.
yato yato niscalati
manas cañcalam asthiram
tatas tato niyamyaitad
atmany eva vasam nayet( B.G. 6.26)
This is the advice of Lord Sri Krsna in the sixth chapter of Bhagavad-gita, which deals with ashtanga yoga or meditation. The mind goes during chanting to some man or woman and not to Radha Krsna. We have to be
very, very attentive while chanting. Watch out! Where is your mind now? While we are chanting our rounds – one round chanted , three rounds, five rounds , but our mind is making so many rounds, going around the world. Went to Moscow so many times, brought it back, went here, went there. So there is a lot of homework to be done while chanting of Hare Krishna. You should be telling to yourself – Neti! Neti! Neti! Not this! Not this! Don't think of this. Don't go there. Bringing the mind back and fix it on:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare.
Think of Radha Krsna. Remember Radha Krsna. Pray to Radha Krsna. Pray to Radha. Today is Her birthday. She is kinder today. We could take advantage of Her kindness. We could pray to Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He is Radha and Krsna combined. He has become tum bina ke dayalu jagat sansare. Who is kinder than you, Oh Lord! Caitanya Mahaprabhu
-patita-pavana-hetu tava avatara. mo sama patita prabhu na paibe are You have appeared Radhe, You have appeared along with Krsna in the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, in this age of Kali and I am fallen, very fallen. My mind is going here and there. Please lift me.
ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya ((Siksastakam verse 5)
Siksastakam prayers are also there. We have to think on those terms. When we say Hare Krishna, Oh! Krsna , ayi nanda-tanuja, Krsna, son of Nanda Maharaja, I am your kinkar. See what has happened to me, I am fallen. I am falling in this devotion of Russia. So please pick me up. Fix me in the dust particle of Your lotus feet. Engage me in service of Your lotus feet. Like that we have to drag your mind away from wherever it goes to the worldly objects.
bhaj hu re mana sri nanda nandana abhaya caranravinda re
This is also an appeal to the mind. ‘My dear mind, please worship the lotus feet of abhay caranaravinda. The Lord’s lotus feet which are fearless. O mind. please meditate.’ So we could turn to our mind and beg the mind to please
think of Radha and Krsna. We could pray or sometimes Srila Bhaktisiddanta Saraswati Thakur recommends that we beat the mind, slap the rascal mind with the broom. A broom is used for sweeping in the morning hours. Beat the mind with shoes, army shoes or bigger thicker shoes. Try to bring the mind to the senses. "yena kena prakarena manah krsna niveshayat". "Somehow or the other one must associate with Lord Krsna".
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
Keep thinking, contemplating, meditating. We practice everyday. We chant our prescribed number of rounds everyday, and this practice we do everyday, day after day. It is expected of us to make progress and eventually attain perfection. Attain mantra- siddhi, perfection in chanting of Hare Krishna. So we wish you success in chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra. May Radharani bless you all, on the occasion of Her Appearance Day.

LOST VILLAGE PART 2
Yesterday Guru Maharaja was discussing village life and was explaining how he was brought up in the village atmosphere and how that village lifestyle with Krsna’s Lila and he was saying how very easy it was for those who were brought up in that atmosphere and lifestyle to line simple and think high.
Today is the continuation ….
Born and brought up in the village we could very easily relate to the activities in Gokul as the pastimes of Yasoda, Krsna, Nandababa and all the villagers – the cows and the bulls and the herding pastimes. While I was a cowherd boy I would go herding the cows everyday. Then I grew up and went to school and high school.
However during the weekends I was free and would herd the cows, bulls , buffaloes and there were some goats also. In Gokul also all of them would go herding the cows and buffaloes. Krsna played with his friends with the cows and buffaloes herding. Even we played and we also carried our lunch packets, very similar to Krsna and His friends. Their mothers would prepare lunch. So did our mothers. During the day we also sat in circles and ate. As Krsna never went
herding cows alone, so we also were never alone. So many of our friends used to be out there herding their cows. We were supposed to be a group and we played different games. We played some of the games that Krsna played. We were
playing or swimming as Krsna swam. Of course, we did not have Yamuna and Radha-kunda, but we had small ponds. We ate together, sitting in a circle. We did not have Krsna sitting in the centre and we were not so Krishna conscious.
We heard stories of Prahlad and Dhruv Maharaja in our childhood and practised that same lifestyle culture. We grew where the cows were served and worshipped.
That’s why Krsna is known as …
namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca jagad-dhitaya krishnaya govindaya namo namah
… the Lord, the worshipper of brahmins and caretaker of the cows. He served the cows and the Brahmans. So what should we be doing? Remnants of that culture is still found in Bharat desh. 50- 60 years ago there were still some Brahmins and only some were practicing. I think, things have rapidly changed drastically. A residue of that culture is diminishing and is practically nil. This is a sad story. Srila Prabhupad wished to revive and demonstrate that culture and remind the whole world of that culture. Srila Prabhupada started farm communities, of course it was spreading Krishna consciousness in the world as per the wishes of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. ‘My name will be chanted every town and village.’ Srila Prabhupada had taken the note of will and prediction of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It wasn't just Srila Prabhupada. We cannot and should never forget all the Acaryas and the devotees in our Gaudiya Vaisnava Parampara. They have kept this spirit alive reminding everyone of the prediction and will of Sri Krsna
Caitanya Mahaprabhu from Jagannatha das babaji Maharaja, Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur till Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur and Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. We should not forget. They have struggled hard to keep the memories and the spirit alive and their endeavours to make Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s prediction come true Then Srila Prabhupada took it up and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur then further instructed His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada that he spread this Krishna consciousness to the rest of the world in English. English is a kind of an international language.
We know that as soon as Srila Prabhupada started preaching in English he wrote books in English for his followers who were from all over the world. They had many different mother tongues so he instructed his followers, ‘Translate them in as many languages as possible and print them in as many languages as possible and then distribute books, Distribute books!’ This distribution of his books was done by his followers. In this way, the instructions of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the prediction of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the glories of Gauranga, Radha Krsna, are spreading all over the world.
I was making a point earlier that Srila Prabhupada in order to revive that ancient eternal spirit of Krishna consciousness or spirit of religion and culture he wanted to have some role model farm communities or village where people could come witness the cultural practices of Krishna consciousness where they stayed in a pattern of ' simple living, high thinking’. Here they are now depending on the land and the cows and whole economic development is based on the land and the cow During his lifetime Srila Prabhupada started several communities in the world. He
began with New Vrindavan in Gita Nagari in America. Also here in France, Europe where I am right now stationed. Paris is not far from here and Prabhupada started New Mayapur and New Naimisharanya in South India Hyderabad. Like that
there are other farm communities around the world. Prabhupada started his endeavour. He sat on the property land literally under the tree where he stayed and talked to his followers. He shared his vision about these farm communities which are doing their best. Of course there are challenges to unfold the vision of Srila Prabhupada where simple living and high thinking is practiced and attempts are being made to practice the simple living and high thinking.
It's going on. It is just as the residents of Gokul were depending on the land and the cows. Specially this is Vaisya duties and dharma. krishi goraksha vanijya – do the farming Krishi, goraksha – cow protection and Vanijya , if there is some surplus agricultural produce, grains , vegetables, milk products, then share them or do the bartering. ‘I have extra milk. You take this. You have surplus of vegetables, so you give me vegetables.’.That lady had come to sell fruits and Krsna was interested in her fruits . He became 'phalarthi'. and he walked outside Nanda Bhavan. That lady was right in front of Nanda Bhavan with her basket filled with fruits and she was advertising, ‘Take Bananas! Take oranges! Take Guavas! Take this fruit, that fruit.
Phal lelo! Phal lelo ! Krsna heard and He was interested and He had walked outside Nanda Bhavan. Was he carrying some money? No ! He had grains in His hand and He gave the grains and in exchange for the fruit the fruit selling lady
gave to Krsna. This is bartering. Other residents of Gokul were also doing the same thing – bartering. There was no currency, no paper notes, no bills. The economy was taken care of. Your needs were taken care of. Life and all that was
grown in the fields in the farms and additionally lots of milk products and that is more than sufficient. Your maintenance ultimately is what you need.
annad bhavanti bhutani
yajnad bhavati parjanyo
All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rain. Rains are produced by performance of yajna [sacrifice], and yajna is born of prescribed duties. (BG 3.14) annad bhavati bhutani. You need food. Grains are also food. From grains to vegetables also food and milk products. Everything is food. So all that you need comes from our mothers. Mother Earth, Mother Cow maintained human beings by all those natural products the body can have. Then annad bhavati bhutani all the bhutas of the living entities are maintained or subsist on food grains. So this is the Lord’s arrangement. Then healthy bodies could chant,
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
This is the yajna and other activities also are yajna, though they are making offerings of those activities
yat karosi yad asnasi
yaj juhosi dadasi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tat kurusva mad-arpanam
O son of Kunti, all that you do, all that you eat, all that you offer and give away, as well as all austerities that you may perform, should be done as an offering unto Me.(9.27)
If we dedicate all our endeavours all our activities in the service of the Lord that is called yajna. Yajna is not only saying Hare Krishna and some kirtana, but all activities are supposed to be yajnas.
yajna yarthas karma – One is expected to perform all the activities for yajna. Yajna is Lord. The name of the Lord is Yajna or Yajna Purus. Performing all the activities is yajya and yajnad bhavati parjanyo as you are busy performing, the yajna then Yajna Purus, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is also present. The yajna shala is also set and there is the invocation. The Lord is invited and the kalas is installed and different demigods are also invited for it. Different demigods are also present so when the yajna is performed then the demigods also get their share, or they get
the remnants. They are pleased and Krsna has said in Bhagavad-gita that the human being will get their necessities also, by performance of yajna and your needs human being needs are supplied by that particular demigod who is in
charge of rains.
yajnad bhavati parjanyo
You have to perform yajna and the phal- result is the reciprocation of Supreme Lord and demigod Indra. There are lots of showers. If there are rains, from rains come grains and then annad bhavati bhutani . just see the connection. See the relationship. Human beings perform Yajna and there is shower of rains, then come grains and then once there are grains that's how your needs are fulfilled. ‘Oh Lord!
Give us our daily bread.’ Christians go to church to pray like that. ‘Give grains, give that.’ Food and vegetables come from grains. Our vegetables come from grains and we eat some of those vegetables. Some of the vegetables or grass is eaten by the cows and here you go eat other kind of food. From the cows you get milk and milk products from the cows your maintenance is taken care of. I was sharing some of my personal experiences that I grew up with in my childhood
2nd September 2019
LOST VILLAGES – PART 1
Till now we did 'Let's chant together' now we will do ' let's talk '.Walk the talk . I want to repeat the talk I did with the devotees here in Paris about cow protection and agriculture. There were 30 delegates who had come to the Czech Republic as they had a conference. I addressed them one morning on the topic they gave – 'land and cows'. Taking care of cows, growing trees, ploughing fields, vegetables and organic farming. I was speaking to them about the experience of my childhood days as I grew up in a village. The kind of lifestyle, the values that we practiced. I will say a few of the highlights of the pattern which was prevailing in those days. Now in Indian villages and around the world it is spoilt. It is said, 'Man made the country' but now , 'Man has made the mess' .
Effectively we are messing it up. Villages are spoilt and lost. Bhaktivaibhava Swami Maharaja found out that I have written such a book about village life 50 or 60 years ago and what it is now. God made the Country, Man made the Mess. Krishna made and present modern man, wether in the village or city, in India or outside it is a big mess. So
Bhaktivaibhava Maharaja found out when I was in the middle of writing this book. He really got interested in it. He decided to make a documentary film on this book. He took the story from the manuscript of my book. He personally came with his whole crew to Aravade in Maharashtra, India and made a movie and he entitled it "Lost Village".
The main objective of telling this story is to explain what has been lost, or what mess has been made at present and things are spoilt.
Village life would begin with the crowing of cocks. Cuckoo ssss cuckoo ssss these were the sounds I would hear. We used to have such sounds of cocks happily crowing. It is the Lord’s alarm. Lord Krsna also got up to the sound of the crowing of cocks in Dwaraka. Gradually people of the village started to dislike this crowing of the cocks and then they
started killing those cocks and eating them. ‘You rascal cocks, you are disturbing our early morning sleep? We will gobble you up’. So getting up early in the morning is also finished. Our mothers would get up early in the morning, to do what? The first business used to be grinding. They used to sing some devotional songs while grinding. Panduranga Vitthal Vitthal Vitthal! Mazya Vitthala Panduranga. There used to be other Krsna songs while grinding. Now modern man has grinding machines. There is now packed atta(flour) which is six months or six years old of which roti or chapati is made and then we eat that. But our mothers used to grind atta every single morning.
By singing songs she was in the mode of goodness. There were good vibrations. Early in the morning my father and elder brother would go to the farm, to plough the land, prepare the land. Mother had to stay back home and churn the butter. We would hear the pleasing sounds of the churning. You can even meditate upon the sound of the churning of the butter. There is every reason to remind you of Yashoda churning butter in the early morning hours. She used to remember Bal Krsna while churning butter, chanting different songs. So we could very easily relate to Yashoda churning butter in the early morning hours as we had experienced such a scene in our village . Nowadays the folks in town and cities, what do they know of churning and preparing fresh butter. After churning, the butter pot used to be hung from the ceiling, as Yashoda used to do and then Krsna stole that butter in His own house. So my mother also saw that and it was kept away from various creatures, cats or rats. After the churning of the butter the cows were milked. Many time my bhabi ( wife of elder brother) went with my mother for milking. She would bring the freshly milked warm milk for us. Sometimes we sat there with mother while milking and drank a glass full of the freshly milked warm milk. So for those born and brought up in the village, we understand and can easily relate to activities in Gokul, the pastimes of Krsna with Yashoda, Nandababa and other villagers . There were cows, bulls and herding pastimes.
At one point I was also a cowherd boy, and went herding our cows, buffaloes and goats. At times I would go every day. Then I went to school and high school and was not able to go for herding. Such is the village lifestyle we have experienced.

CHANTING and HEARING – PILLARS OF BHAGAVAT DHARMA
Today I was talking while I was chanting. Maybe it is Japa istagosti. We were chanting and you were writing and I was responding. I was inquiring about the Janmastami reports, and this and that. As a result, I ended up chanting mixed with talking. Chatting while chanting is not the right thing to do. Only chant while chanting. Don't talk. This talk is talking about japa and Krsna and talking about Janmastami. Talking about the devotees, talking about hearing and chanting, but is not hearing the holy name. We don't hear anything else. We hear Krsna. nityam bhagavat sevaya. There is a recommendation that we hear bhagavatam regularly.
brahmanda bhramite kona bhagyavan jiva
guru-krsna-prasade paya bhakti-lata-bija
According to their karma, all living entities are wandering throughout the entire universe. Some of them are being elevated to the upper planetary systems, and some are going down into the lower planetary systems. Out of many millions of wandering living entities, one who is very fortunate gets an opportunity to associate with a bona fide spiritual master by the grace of Krsna. By the mercy of both Krsna and the spiritual master, such a person receives the seed of the creeper of devotional service. (CC Madhya Lila 19, 151)
sravana-kirtana-jale karaye sechana
Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said that Guru gives a seed of devotion and then plants it in the garden of your heart – bhakti lata bija. And you have to look after, sechana , you have to cultivate that seed of that bhakti lata bija, the seed of devotion by sravana kirtana jale. This is not water. It says you should feed the bija with more sravana kirtan jal, which has to sprout, grow and ultimately bring fruit in the form of Krsna Prema. Then you will relish love for the Lord and then we could understand that you started with the seed, bhakti-lata bija,
guru-krsna-prasade paya bhakti-lata-bija
By the grace of the Lord we come in contact with Guru, the spiritual master. He gives us the bhakti-lata bija and with the sowing of the seed, bija we take care of the plant then the tree, bhakti vriksha and the flowers and ultimately take care of the fruits which is the love of the Lord. Krsna prem, Krsna prayojana -Krsna prema prayojana. Bhakti-lata bija, sowing the seed and making a connection developing relationship with Bhagawan through bhakti.
And with your Guru’s assistance you make a connection with the Lord. That connection may be through the name of the Lord and other means. Bija is an introduction. Then some relationship is established, formal jnana then abhideya, devotional service and then when devotional service is raw, sravan kirtana jale that's the sechana Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends. Take care of the seed ,the plant. Now, do more and more bhakti. Bhakti means sravan kirtana. Jal from sambandh gives abhideya, lots of devotional services. Sravan kirtana centred and then prayojana, ultimate goal is prema pumartho mahan. When we get the fruit of our labour we call that as Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu says in
ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitaṁ mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
"O son of Nanda Maharaja, I am Your eternal servant, yet somehow or other I have fallen into the ocean of birth and death. Please pick me up from this ocean of death and place me as one of the atoms of Your lotus feet." Lord Caitanya teaches us to come in touch with the dust of the Lord's lotus feet, for then there will undoubtedly be all success. (Siksastakam 5) Commenting on that verse Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself made a comment and He said, “My dear Lord, I am Your servant. I will keep serving. I have been serving and serving, I want to serve you. So like the servants who at the end of the day, end of the week or end of the month get a salary, the fruit of their labour. A boss reciprocates with them and gives them the gifts as cash. So Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu commented in Siksastaka, “Your servant gives Me vetan(salary). Give the salary to Me in the form of Krsna Prema. As He already said,
na dhanam na janam na sundarim
kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye
mama janmani janmanisvare
bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi
O Almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor to enjoy beautiful women. Nor do I want any number of followers. What I want only is the causeless mercy of Your devotional service in my life, birth after birth. (Siksastaka 4) Don't give me dhanam janam. Don't give me liberation either. I am not interested. In other
words the Lord is also saying
krsna-bhakta — niskama, ataeva ‘santa’
bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kami — sakali ‘asanta’
“Because a devotee of Lord Krsna is desireless, he is peaceful. Fruitive workers desire material enjoyment, jnanis desire liberation, and yogis desire material opulence; therefore they are all lusty and cannot be peaceful. (CC Madhya 19.149) I don't have the desire to have sense gratification in return, bhukti mukti, liberation or siddhi, some kind of asta siddhi, some perfections, but Your bhakti and of course service. But give me in return bhakti for what I do for You. Give it to Me in the form of prema, Krsna prem, Your prem, Prem as devotion or emotion, but that feeling or devotion is always translated into action as devotional service. As we say “I love you , I love you ,” but a devotee expresses love by performing more and more loving devotional services. ‘Give me love in return’ can be translated as give me more devotional service.
I did so much for You, so give me love as payment so that I can again serve You more with loving devotional service, loving attitude free from all that kama or dhanam, janam sundarim. This sravan kirtana is a devotional service. And this feeds the seed, seedling, plant or bhakti vriksha. Hearing and chanting, this sravan and kirtana is not only Hare
Krsna Hare Krsna kirtana but it's the sravan kirtana of the Bhagavad-gita or Bhagavatam, Caitanya- caritamrita. There are so many scriptures. So much is there to hear or know about the Lord. We are doing a marathon sravan kirtana and part of the time is Hare Krsna Hare Krsna maha-mantra chanting. Travel kirtana and other times, more time hearing
Bhagavatam. Hear Krsna what He is saying to Arjuna which was meant for us. We have got to find what message Krsna left behind. Just a few days ago we celebrated Sri Krsna Janamastami. Krsna appeared on Sri Krsna Janmastami. Krsna grew up and when He was there on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra, He sang a song, song of Krsna, the Bhagavad-gita. That was for you, for each one of us.
The Lord left behind the message for us, so are we not going to read what He left for us? Hear that message and understand that message. A few days ago I asked someone, “How is your chanting?” “It's a struggle Maharaja, to complete my rounds.” “And what about reading Gita Bhagavat?”
“I have hardly anytime to do so.”
So more or less everybody's response is like that. Not just one person responding, but more or less everybody is struggling with this problem. I am also very busy. It's not that I am just sitting idle. I have a lot of seva that needs to be done. There is always a big list of things to be done . But still I spend a lot of my time chanting the maha-mantra and studying Bhagavad-gita, Bhagvatam, Caitanya-caritamrita etc. Most of the time of my life is to study all these scriptures and chanting of the 'Hare Krsna' maha-mantra. When we do sravan of these scriptures and the maha-mantra then you feel like doing it still more and more. When I study these and if I feel I need to find out the answers of a particular query, then I do more study of it, thus I keep myself completely busy.
In last year's GBC meeting they made one statement based on their observation, that ISKCON devotees and followers are not reading Prabhupada’s books or do very little study of Srila Prabhupada's books. They were very disappointed by this observation that such little reading of Prabhupada's books is being done. Temple devotees do a little better, but still not very satisfactory. What to speak of congregation devotees from homes. So it's a strong recommendation from the GBC that all ISKCON devotees should read Srila Prabhupada's books. They should also read their spiritual masters books. But read they must. The day you have time you should sit down and read. If you don't have time to sit and read, then hear. While eating, drinking, watching, walking , driving, flying you could hear. I observe people sitting next to me in the plane hearing. So why not us? We could also use a lot of time like that for hearing. Many have to start 2 hours prior to their business before the office starts. So that’s 2 hours or many hours that could be used while travelling for hearing and chanting. These days so many devices are available. We could
use them for lectures, katha talks and so forth. Prabhupada said that all books should be made into audio, we could very easily use them while walking or driving. You could be next to the driver. I do this many times. First of all you should realise the importance of hearing and chanting. Then be inclined to do it. Just realizing the importance is not enough. We say only when one begins chanting and hearing then one realises the importance of it.
Arjuna had Krsna with him and when he realized the importance of fighting he acted that way. Arjuna is a Ksatriya. karishye vachanam tava. – ' I will do as You say, my dear Lord. I will do it.’ He didn't want to fight, but he was convinced after hearing Krsna about the importance of fighting. Then on the spot he picked up his bow and arrow and started shooting. So likewise realise the importance of sravanam kirtanam visnu smaranam. This is very foundational devotional service.
sravana-kirtana-jale karaye sechana
nitya-siddha krsna-prema ‘sadhya’ kabhu naya
sravanadi-suddha-citte karaye udaya
Pure love for Krsna is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens.(CC Madhya 22.107)
The very foundational siddhant of Bhagavat dharma is that by hearing, by sravan, kirtana, smaran , padsevan etc, but emphasis is on sravan and kirtana. By doing that you could be reviving your love for the Lord.
All the living entities have love for the Lord, which unfortunately we have forgotten, and instead we are loving people of this world. Oh I love you! I love you! They have fallen in love with so many things, so many persons, objects, food and this and that. I love my dog. We have become distracted and we are becoming ignorant by ignoring our love for the
Lord. We have to become knowledgeable, and not remain ignorant fools. I am talking to you, practitioners of Krsna consciousness and sure you know Krsna, you are realising Krsna. Some realisation is there, but there is so much more to know, so much more to realise. That is why we have Bhakti sastri and Bhakti Vaibhava courses. Srila Prabhupada designed these courses to give us direction, to encourage us to study. So we should study, hear, chant more and more. Go on marathon and this is not just an occasional marathon.
Sravan and kirtana marathon should be regularly followed, everyday! That is what keeps us connected with the Lord. Hear him or we hear about him, know Him more and more, know yourself more. And you know more about the fact that you are His and He is yours. I had visited one devotee’s home and on the wall there was written " I am yours and you are
mine". So this is a fact. The way we have made so many worldly connections. We come up with excuses – I am not a sannyasi. I have so many responsibilities. This is because you have not understood or you have not heard the Lord, not read about Him. So you do not even know what you are duty is. I am doing my duty. Krsna has said
karmany evadhikaras te
ma phalesu kadacana
ma karma-phala-hetur bhur
ma te sango 'stv akarmani
You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty. (BG 2.47)
To do your duty is the dharma. Half knowledge is dangerous. We should know this is not even one complete verse. People just follow this – karmany evadhikaras te. But you should know more about this verse. Krsna has said. We 'Hare Krsna' devotees cannot remain Hindus. Our goal is to become Krsna conscious. What makes us Krsna conscious is:
nitya-siddha krsna-prema ‘sadhya’ kabhu naya
sravanadi-suddha-citte karaye udaya
Pure love for Krsna is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing and chanting, this love naturally awakens.(CC Madhya 22.107)
Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
This will make us Krsna conscious, which is goal of this life. Becoming Krsna conscious means we are enjoying or relishing Krsna prem, the fruit of our labour. All that we do for Krsna which is basically hearing and chanting , sravan and kirtana about Krsna, Lord Sri Caitanya or Lord Rama is what we should be trying to do in order to become Krsna conscious. Srila Prabhupada named this society the International Society for Krsna Consciousness. International society, global worldwide society, to make people Krsna conscious. Society of Krsna conscious people, and a society to make people Krsna conscious.
I think this food for thought is good enough for a few days. Now I will leave you for your further consideration and contemplations.
(;While driving you could be hearing. Aur if you are sitting next to driver seat, you could be reading. I do that. First of all realise the importance of hearing and chanting and then do it , inclin)
