22nd October 2020 Where are enemies reside! Hare Krsna! Devotees from 800 locations are chanting with us. Gaura Premanande Hari Haribol! jīv jāgo, jīv jāgo, gauracānda bole kota nidrā jāo māyā-piśācīra kole Translation Lord Gauranga is calling, "Wake up, sleeping souls! Wake up, sleeping souls! How long will you sleep in the lap of the witch called Maya? (Verse 1, Jiv Jago Jiv Jago, Arunodaya Kirtana Song 2, Bhaktivinoda Thakura) yāre dekha, tāre kaha ‘kṛṣṇa’-upadeśa āmāra ājñāya guru hañā tāra’ ei deśa Translation Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa as they are given in the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land. (CC Madhya 7.128) Wake up sleeping soul! Chant and preach about Krsna. We were discussing the three modes of Nature - the mode of goodness, passion and ignorance from Bhagavad-gītā. We need to identify these modes to get relieved from it. You all were saying what you learnt from this and what changes you are going to implement. Arjun is asking Krsna questions. He doesn't need to ask, but he is asking on behalf of us. sa evāyaṁ mayā te ’dya yogaḥ proktaḥ purātanaḥ bhakto ’si me sakhā ceti rahasyaṁ hy etad uttamam Translation That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science. (BG. 4.3) Arjuna is a devotee and friend of Krsna. He is asking questions for us as we can't even ask questions. By doing this, he is setting the ideal in front of us. atha kena prayukto ’yaṁ pāpaṁ carati pūruṣaḥ anicchann api vārṣṇeya balād iva niyojitaḥ Translation Arjuna said: O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, by what is one impelled to sinful acts, even unwillingly, as if engaged by force? (BG. 3.36) Arjuna is asking, O Krsna! Many times it so happens that we don't wish to do something which we know that we shouldn't do but still we end up doing it as if some external factor is forcing us to do so. What is that external factor? We should ask this kind of question for proper understanding. Either people don't inquire or they don't even know about the sins and good deeds. They don't have the power of discretion. Those who are in Maya (illusion) don't know that they are in Maya. Once you start reading, listening and associating with devotees, you start developing the proper understanding. sādhu-saṅga’, ‘sādhu-saṅga’ — sarva-śāstre kaya lava-mātra sādhu-saṅge sarva-siddhi haya Translation The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment’s association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success. (CC Madhya 22.54) Athāto brahma jijñāsā Translation In order to get out of the bodily conception, one has to increase attachment to or inquiry about Brahman. (Vedānta Sutra) We should have the desire to know about Krsna and not useless things. kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhy enam iha vairiṇam Translation The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world. (BG. 3.37) Question asked by Arjuna was replied by the Lord. The factors that forcefully make us do some sinful actions are lust and anger. There are four more such factors - greed, pride, attachment and jealousy. These are also called Shada Ripu where shad means six and ripu means enemy. Krsna says, "O Arjuna! You must know (viddhy) that these six are your enemies which impel you to sinful acts, even unwillingly." You can read these verses from Bhagavad-gītā 3.36 onwards. indriyāṇi mano buddhir asyādhiṣṭhānam ucyate etair vimohayaty eṣa jñānam āvṛtya dehinam Translation The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust. Through them lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him. (BG 3.40) Then Arjuna asked, "Where do these enemies stay?" Earlier we were embracing these six enemies since we didn't know that these are our enemies. Now that we know them, to overcome these enemies, to get rid of them, we must know where they live. Krsna says, "The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this lust." The body is a field, and we, the soul, should be the knower of the field. In this field, the enemies stay in 3 places namely the mind, intelligence and the senses. These enemies have made us lusty, angry, greedy, etc. Therefore, it is important to identify and get rid of the enemies. How to identify and get rid of the enemies? daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te Translation This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it. (BG. 7.14) The Maya (illusion) and we, the soul pertains to the Lord. Therefore, the Lord is giving us the solution to get rid of His illusory energy or six enemies. tasmāt tvam indriyāṇy ādau niyamya bharatarṣabha pāpmānaṁ prajahi hy enaṁ jñāna-vijñāna-nāśanam Translation Therefore, O Arjuna, best of the Bhāratas, in the very beginning curb this great symbol of sin [lust] by regulating the senses, and slay this destroyer of knowledge and self-realization. (BG. 3.41) The Lord says, "We must control our senses in the beginning (ādau)." These enemies enter from the nine gates of senses in the field (body) in which we live. sarva-karmāṇi manasā sannyasyāste sukhaṁ vaśī nava-dvāre pure dehī naiva kurvan na kārayan Translation When the embodied living being controls his nature and mentally renounces all actions, he resides happily in the city of nine gates [the material body], neither working nor causing work to be done. (BG. 5.13) If we do not stop these enemies right away then they will enter from the senses and reach the mind, the sixth sense and then intelligence, vināsh kāle vipreet buddhi meaning adversity kills intelligence. mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛti-sthāni karṣati Translation The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind.(BG.15.7) Therefore, we need to identify the enemies before it enters through the senses. We must control our senses. śamo damas tapaḥ śaucaṁ kṣāntir ārjavam eva ca jñānaṁ vijñānam āstikyaṁ brahma-karma svabhāva-jam Translation Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness – these are the natural qualities by which the brāhmaṇas work. (BG. 18.42) The sense object like hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell enters through the senses. We must identify the nature of the sense object, whether it is out of goodness, passion or ignorance. teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te Translation To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. (BG. 10.10) We must pray to the Lord to give us intelligence. He is ready to give us the intelligence. Those who sincerely desire to get rid of these 6 enemies, who desire to grow in Krishna consciousness, Krsna gives them the intelligence. The body is being compared to a chariot. We, the souls are riding on a chariot. The senses are the horses, the mind is the reins, the intelligence is the charioteer and the destination of this chariot is Goloka Dhama which can be attained by practicing Krishna consciousness. īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā Translation The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone’s heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy. (BG. 18.61) Our six enemies are derived from the three modes of nature. Lust and anger is derived from the mode of passion. The other four enemies are also derived from the mode of passion and ignorance. If we, by practice, elevate ourselves to pure goodness then we get rid of the modes of nature and by this, we can get rid of lust, anger, etc. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare This Hare Krsna mahā-mantra is devotional service which is of pure goodness. We have to reach this stage of pure goodness where the mode of goodness, passion and ignorance have no access. Well, we are discussing what you have learnt from the katha on the three modes of nature in the past 3-4 days. What and how will you implement these changes? Hare Krsna!
